Wow. Guess there's no point as I can see this will likely further devolve.
I'll still choose to defend myslf in the manner I see most fitting. So far it has been pepper spray as a deterrent and without a firearm due to the areas I've been.

Yes, of course you can choose to do that if you wish. If you ever see the need to shoot an animal, I hope you'll choose to be more responsible in the clean-up of the situation than you've described here in this thread.
Some of us are simply less afraid of all the "dangerous animals" out there waiting to "threaten our families" or "chew on our legs", as you've described. To each their own, I guess.

So far it has been pepper spray as a deterrent and without a firearm due to the areas I've been. Hi, how are you today? Me, I am doing great. I was at REI, my wife got a new pair of shoes and I picked up some Wrightsocks. This thread is a good thread on a good subject that tends to bring out peoples passions. Me, I do not own guns but I am pro guns. I think, you are kinda new here. From what I seen there are, as in any boards, people who 'attack' the subject and there are people who 'attack' the poster and posters who defend their posts and people who attack the repliers. With you being kinda new, think of it as you 'joining a gang.' In joining a gang you are either 'sexed' in or you are 'beat in.' Since 'we' canot sex in a new person there is, then, a tendency to beat in the new people. I and others here went through the 'beat-in' phase. For me the thread, of my first post, got so bad, that I quit looking in on the thread to see what new bashing I was getting. Anyways, welcome to the Backpackers Forums and glad to have you around.

Wow. Guess there's no point. I respectfully disagree. The conversation encouraged me to ponder the question. My backcountry sphere of influence excludes grizzly bear range and habitat. Looking ahead, I will be spending significant dwell time within the grizzly bear range. Your thread made me consider the question and take an action item. That's an upside and positive outcome.

Well, actually, the attacking animal would have been the one that created the situation. Wrong. Unless you believe if someone broke into your house and you defended your home that you are responsible for creating the situation. The human invaded the animals' home, thereby creating the situation. The animal has no choice except to live in the wilderness. You do not have to go there. I'm of the firm belief that even if a human never knows the why of an attack, the human brought it on because animals do not live with malicious intent.

Some of us are simply less afraid of all the "dangerous animals" out there waiting to "threaten our families" or "chew on our legs", as you've described. To each their own, I guess. Please quote me where I've been irresponsible on the "clean-up" as you are suggesting. Again someone attempts to twist things to suite their opinion. I described that because it does happen. Quite rare indeed, but to say otherwise wouldn't be truthful. There is a sense of concern and should be, and what I do about it is make sure my child is either between us or just in front of us to reduce an opportunity a predator may have. I've also explained how she should behave if there were an issue, and not in one single one have I mentioned a firearm. So you can twist around anything I've said as you wish but it would be dishonest. I have clearly stated many times now, a stance the majority of you are claiming, that pepper spray is by far a better option. I just happen to think there are more options available within reason and if you are responsible and well enough trained. I'm quite blown away by some of the responses. I thought this was a place to have civil conversations that may well lead to enlightenment and knowledge. Instead I'm seeing politician's tricks and unwarranted statements.

I hike with people that are rational about gear choices and wilderness skills, not people that rationalize. Carry whatever you want, but most people that I hike with would prefer that I bring something everyone will enjoy, like a nice bourbon or maybe a watermelon. If you are hiking or camping with me, I expect to be told that you are carrying, I don't like surprises. I enjoy shooting at home, but have no desire to hear gunfire during most hikes and camping trips, it harshes my mellow.
Post whatever you want, but don't be surprised or easily offended, when others take exception to, or criticize your posts. We are entitled to our opinions too. Read through some of the older threads and you will get an idea of what "hot button" topics are likely to draw debate.
Welcome to the forum.

I'm actually not new to this forum or this type of conversation. I'm not generally easily offended, but I do take exception to people twisting my words, and I certainly don't care for remarks that are uncalled for. And nobody should. Like you I also believe that a gun should be proclaimed in such situations and believe it to be disrespectful to bring one unannounced into someone's home.

I described that because it does happen. Quite rare indeed, but to say otherwise wouldn't be truthful. Nobody said otherwise. Nobody denied the existence of animal attacks any more than they denied the existence of meteor strikes. We just don't all choose to dig bedrock bunkers in camp each night simply because meteors exist, nor do we tend to set lightning rods in camp even though a lightning strike is more likely than having an animal "chew on our legs." You don't set lightning rods simply because lightning exists, you don't dig bunkers simply because meteors exist, nor carry gas masks because chemical weapons exist, etc. The simple idea that "it exists" is a poor reason to do something, and "to say otherwise wouldn't be truthful." For being hyper-sensitive to having your words allegedly "twisted", a mirror might be the best tool to acquire at the moment.

I see that you are deliberately ignoring UFO abductions.

I see that you are deliberately ignoring UFO abductions. Bodily penetrations of aliens, such as those from bullet wounds, machetes, axes, and other desirable and self-preserving backpacking equipment, only cause their caustic and deadly "blood" to spew out, corroding and disintegrating our flesh over the course of several horrific, terrifying, and unimaginably agonizing seconds, so that our organs spill out, pulse spasmodically, and we die an inexplicable and excruciating death. Per LNT philosophy, this is why we should always kill ourselves rather than any aliens we may encounter.

Again, quote me, which you weren't able to do initially, and wouldn't be able to this time either. Seriously?!?!
