Around Labour Day of this year I went to Oak Mountain in Birmingham, Alabama, with my uncle to camp and hike. Apparently his idea of camping and mine are a bit different, as he was thinking of front country camping. When I think of camping, I think of backcountry. Anyways, we decide to go look around for good trails. We found a trail at Oak Mountain that leads to a waterfall (map attached, read White Trail) and decided to hike only to the waterfall and back. We started on the North Trail Head for reference. It was a hot and humid day. Since I'm a genius, I decided to wear my medium weight wool shirt, cowboy boots, and a Stanley thermos full of water. That hike went well. There were a few risky bits, but not too dangerous considering that lots of people hike that trail. I did fine, though I was a bit hot. The wool wasn't bad. I just didn't bring enough water for me and my uncle. The next day we went back. Since my boots were falling apart from a few years of wear and tear, I sent them back and wore tennis shoes and a t-shirt. I brought more water, but slipped and fell forward a few feet going down the canyon. I nearly fell off of the canyon, but caught myself, and didn't fall 8 or 10 yards to my death into rocks. I rolled my ankle, but luckily didn't break my camera. I got down and took a few photos while no one was there (some of my best) and then my card corrupted. When I tried to re-take them, people flooded in. We headed back, but it was still an 11/10 hike, through all the misery and fuss. Beautiful location. I am planning on going back soon. I don't have a date set, but hopefully this winter or early spring.
