How’s Eastern Mountain Sports (EMS) doing these days? I use to get emails from them before their restructuring several years back. I believe they still have brick ‘n mortar stores but closed many down. Anyone still shop at EMS? How’s the company doing?
Life is a long walk forward thru the cars of a passenger train each filled with; strangers whose stories we never learn, dear friends we long remember and passing acquaintances whose names & faces we take in like a breath and soon breathe away.... So many cars, so many passages."
Of three in my neighborhood, two survived. I shop in the one in Wilton, Ny regularly. Lots of clothes, but gear, too. I just bought a pair of Fencemender pants on sale. Took them snowshoeing and fat biking and They may be my favorite winter pant ever. I've spent thousands over the past couple of decades. The manager knows me and treats me very well. I've bought a few Karrimor items and they've held up incredibly well for the price. It's the parent company. They're a good store in my book. I have EMS down bags that I still use after 30 years.
I used to shop regularly at EMS when I lived in the Boston area in my 20's and early 30's, so we're talking 30+ years ago. I still have a couple of EMS brand things that I use regularly. I guess I'm some sort of a "member" there because they send me a $10 coupon every year, which will prompt me to go to their website and poke around. I usually do find something that I can use. Last year, I bought my Big Agnes Fly Creek Platinum -- their sale price was the best by far (plus that $10 coupon! :D)
I think their self-branded gear, including clothing, are on par with REI's and generally better priced.
Here in upstate NY I have 2 stores within 20min of me. That said, I'd most likely ignore them except they send me a $10 coupon every birthday. So each season as I plan my hikes and determine what gear I need to replace I'll search their website and if I find what I want I'll pay them a visit. I probably use the coupon one out of every 2 years.
