Hi all! I'm currently writing my thesis about backpackers at the University of Jyväskylä and thought this forum could provide me with precious information about the subject. What I would like to hear is stories from your backpacking journeys and I made a quick online survey where you can write them. If you have any questions about the survey I will try my best to answer them. I would really appriciate every answer! Thank you in advance. First, it appears you have the wrong type of backpacking in mind. This isn't a travel website, it's one about spending long periods (1 or more nights) in the wilderness unsupported.
That said, if you'd like to hear stories from backpacking here, look around in this forum. Every single thread here in the "Trip Reports * Storytelling" forum is full of stories about backpacking. Go, click, read. Any stories you particularly enjoy, feel free to comment on. Folks would appreciate it.
If all you're doing is a drive-by link to your survey, and can't be bothered to spend a few minutes actually looking at the many stories already posted here, you can color me uninterested. Those who spend less effort collecting data/stories than they expect others to spend writing them up, fail to impress much. Just my personal opinion, anyway.

From the survey: "I am interested in backpacking as a lifestyle..." We get so many people doing projects in other countries who want feedback from backpackers that it might be good to post a permanent explanation in the "How to..." area to describe why backpacking in the US is not the same as traveling other parts of the world with a rucksack!. In other words, I don't think we see it as a lifestyle, we see it as an activity!
But my foreign travels in Canada, Mexico, and Central America have all been by my own vehicle (camping, but not backpacking) so I may be wrong. Plenty of others here have or are planning trips to other countries; maybe they see that as "backpacking". Any other opinions?

Well there are a few long-distance hikers who are addicted enough that it's really their life. But for most of us, it's something we do when we have a chance--which is also how other kinds of travel are for most of us.
