Makes sense to me, as the body prefers 98º, so heating up to that is more difficult when the weather is colder, wetter, or just plain ugly. If one is lacking in proper clothing, keeping warm is that much more difficult.

If one is lacking in proper clothing, keeping warm is that much more difficult. Just remembered reading a piece on mountain biking, where cold weather riding was preferred if calorie burning.

A calorie (or kilocalorie, as the ones we eat actually are) is a measure of heat. Our bodies convert that to movement, but of course food also fuels body temp. It makes sense that if we have to keep warm as well as move, we’ll burn more calories. That’s also why keeping cool doesn’t burn calories, and in fact why we are so much less effective at staying cool than at warming up.

I have often pointed out that the word calories comes from the latin word for heat. In Italian it is still the same word.
