Breathtaking wildflowers in Death Valley spring to life ahead of possible ‘superbloom’
By Michael Walsh

Yahoo News The rocky and brown environment of Death Valley National Park, in California and Nevada, only gives way to great expanses of vibrant yellow, purple and white flowers under perfect conditions. When this happens, it’s truly a sight to behold.link

bpbasecamp.freeforums.net/thread/1970/death-valley-wildflower-bloom-februaryYeah ever since the October DV floods made the national news I kept on top of what was going on. By Christmas green herbs began rising. By early January some were showing early flowers. then in late January, desertusa.com first impressive pics were posted on their wildflower reports. LA times did feature on a possible super bloom and other newspapers nationally were plugging it every week a bit. Then on the last day of the month they had a good sized storm come in and I pulled the trigger on a road trip for Feb 12>16 when it peaked. Lot more details in my above link feature. Ever since I did the Arizona road trip to Petrified Forest NP and Phoenix areas in 2013 have been hoping to return as really enjoyed many of those landscapes. However Arizona's been rather droughty the last 3 months so again it won't be this year.

For the record, the bloom is pretty well past. Still desert gold south of Badwater, but not the same density as earlier. Better flowers at 3-4000', but they require a little more attention to see and don't make the same kind of carpet. On the up side, cacti are starting to bloom in many places. Joshua trees are blooming but not quite fully open blooms as of Thursday at Lee's Flat or Saturday on the Cima Dome (East Mojave).

Actually all it takes is some water in the form of precip. The relative amounts and timing of precip events determine which species show themselves.

The relative amounts and timing of precip events determine which species show themselves. And that question of how much and when can make the difference between "yeah, there are a few flowers" and "holy freaking cow!"
