This guy was fortunate, give that late September can bring nasty weather to the CO high country. A Durango man was attempting the class 3 south face route up El Diente and got cliffed out around 13,600 ft. He phoned SAR but they could not get up there before dark. The chopper went up the next day and got him. Sounds like he had the right gear with him. I have only scouted the route on 14ers. Lots of loose rock up there. Really nasty. The traverse from El Diente to Mt. Wilson looks epic, but pretty gnarly.

That El Diente/Wilson ridge is a famous class 4 route. Several years ago a hiker died on El Diente. It was his last of the 54 14ers, he had summited, and fell on his descent.

I was under the impression that the standard route was relatively safe Here is a crazy video of a non-standard route, that is clearly class 4. The condition of that rock is terrifying. It looks like it could go at any moment. I read a story once on 14ers by a guy who was doing the crux knife edge on Capitol. He was grasping the top of edge and crab walking across on one side when a slab under his feet slid out from underneath. He obviously survived. Not sure his underpants did.

Wow. I was under the impression that the standard route was relatively safe It is, but I believe it was fall and there was ice in some of the cracks in the rock.
