On Friday, Obama will designate more than 1.8 million acres of California desert for protection with the creation of three national monuments: Castle Mountains, Mojave Trails and Sand to Snow. The new monuments will connect three existing sites — Death Valley and Joshua Tree national parks and the Mojave National Preserve — to create the second-largest desert preserve in the world.Article

Thanks Reuben for posting this important news!
You prompted me to send a "Thank You" correspondence to Sen. K. Ayotte (R-NH). I am a New Hampshire native and my family still lives and votes there. Sen. Ayotte was one of four Republicans who voted against Sen. M. Lee's (R-UT) recent amendment to allow Congress to reverse Teddy Roosevelt's Antiquities Act as it pertains to National Monuments. Hopefully, President Obama will designate the Bear's Ear and Greater Canyonlands as National Monuments before he leaves office.

Yay, it was a long time coming. But glad I am no longer working there and have to explain that no, the federal government hasn't just taken over a whole bunch of land.

Yay, it was a long time coming. But glad I am no longer working there and have to explain that no, the federal government hasn't just taken over a whole bunch of land. Most of it already was federal ownership, and some already Wilderness. No real change in management on the ground for most of the lands.

Ah, yes, exciting up here it was for a little while, but I'm no longer working the frontlines talking to our mis-informed public on a daily basis

That seems to be the norm for the last year of a president's term. OK, with me.
