Though I have never really thought of myself as a writer, the fact is that I do a lot of writing, mostly sermons and written church communications. I have been interested in becoming a better writer, and learning to better incorporate story into my sermons. I recently learned of a workshop being offered in 2022 that will be taught while rafting the Salmon River in Idaho, camping along the way, led by David James Duncan, one of my favorite authors. I submitted an application for the workshop, and just learned that I have been accepted. I am really, really excited.

That sounds awesome--congrats!
I am a big fan of combining work and play in that way. Ever since I did an artist residency at North Cascades NP in 2008, I've tried to take advantage of other opportunities to find work time in the wilderness. Usually it just means a week, or less, of car camping with most of the day devoted to work, while also acclimatizing for a BP trip to follow.
I sometimes face writer's block issues in "regular life." It's probably all in my head, but those work/play trips really help get me past that.

That sounds fun, though maybe not quite as fun as just rafting on the Salmon.

Sounds fantastic, though I always think I’m going to write on wilderness trips, then struggle to even keep up my journal. Maybe with everyone doing it and designated time to write, it will work better! As long as you aren’t tempted to sneak off and go hiking.

As long as you aren’t tempted to sneak off and go hiking. On this particular trip, I'm more likely to be tempted to sneak off and go fishing. But I've been assured there will be time for that.... Makes the entire trip a tax write off! Smart thinking. Even better! I'm including this as part of my planned sabbatical next year, and paying for the whole thing out of a designated sabbatical budget. |

As long as you aren’t tempted to sneak off and go hiking. When I'm doing that sort of mountain trip, I usually plan an hour or three of hiking in the morning, and then work in the afternoon when its more likely to be warm or raining. |

Best way to spend a sabbatical - in the outdoors. I've had one sabbatical in my career. I used it to teach in the Ladakh region of northern India in the Himalayas. Despite my teaching load, I played keyboard at the church (and got them to speed those hymns up), trained 3 congregation members the keyboard to take over when I was gone, and revised the entire hymnbook from 4-part harmony to melody in the right hand and chords in the left hand. That was much easier for them to get in a year's time.
And, in my spare time, I went trekking. During that year, I did a few hundred miles of hiking. I got up 2 19,000 foot peaks and 2 20,000 foot peaks. Mountain passes that were as high as 17,000 feet. I saw yaks and had yak yogurt. And, during my two visa runs that were required for a 14-month stay, I did the Annapurna Circuit and Everest Base Camp in Nepal. Ladakh was a wonderful place, which has a Buddhist culture rather than the usual Indian Hindu culture. I got to see the Dalai Lama twice during that year, as well.
