Gabriel adopted costumes to cover the band retuning after the songs apparently, but it took a life of its own..
Just reading about the original Genesis split during “the Lamb ..” album and tour (‘74-‘75); it ultimately did all factions good in terms of developing their future music and successes. Interestingly, Collins and Gabriel later collaborated on the “gated” drum sound on a Gabriel solo tune that Collins then used with Genesis and on other artists albums. In the mid-80s he (Collins) was playing guest drums on everyone’s albums of the time .. even Clapton.
Still would’ve liked to have seen a reunion earlier. Couldn’t find a good live version of “the Lamb lies down.., so here’s the original studio one ..

Something that came to mind last night was that maybe Genesis should have had MORE COW BELLS!!!

I'm trying to remember a German band that was really popular for a brief time. Maybe Kraftwerk. I was thinking the same thing, but you beat me to it. Wasn't there a song about the Autobahn that got airplay in the states?

Oddly, I really like most historical prog rock and synth rock. I also like contemporary prog rock like Thank You Scientist. But I never connected with Genesis at all. Not the older prog rock stuff, even less with the later pop style, and even less than that with solo Phil Collins (which I would rank as among the dregs of successful pop music). HYOH, of course. I also never really "connected" with Genesis, even though I was into prog rock in the 1970's and still listen to some of it. I bought albums from bands like Triumvarate, Epitaph, and King Crimson (I have the CD for Court, which I play now and then). Not sure if this falls in the same category, but I still love Spirit's Twelve Dreams. Saw ELP in 1974, and have a couple of their albums. Yes and Pink Floyd are regulars in my car. I don't dislike Genesis, and appreciate hearing them on the radio. It's all good, but the indelible tracks of my youth still resonate the most.

I never saw Genesis, but Phil and Chester seemed to make a great team. I've seen Peter Gabriel two or three times. Not unexpectedly, he's slowed down - he's aged, gained weight, and lost hair. So the stage shows aren't as physical as they used to be, but he's still well worth seeing. No more boats, telephone booths, crowd surfing, etc. I saw him on one tour which included boats and a giant ball of bubblewrap that he climbed into and rolled around in while still singing. And as always, he still takes other rather unknown musicians or the road with him, to both learn from them and feature them. Levon Minassian, Youssou N'Dour, Papa Wemba, et al. One concert I saw featured two opening acts, one of which was the Blinds Boys of Alabama. I knew them and had seen them before, but I was part of a very, very small minority. They burned down the house before Peter ever came near the stage, and, as with many of his opening acts, he brought them back later for the finale. His semi-regular band includes (included?) the likes of Tony Levin and Manu Katche. No slouches. With Youssou and friends. And you just can't beat Biko. Stephen Biko was sort of Nelson Mandela before Nelson Mandela. Unlike Mandela, he was killed. In police room 619. To me, this has always been a very moving song. Almost like an anthem. The ending lyrics seem to be even more true now than ever. Or does every generation say that? September '77 Port Elizabeth weather fine It was business as usual In police room 619 Oh Biko, Biko, because Biko Oh Biko, Biko, because Biko Yihla Moja, Yihla Moja The man is dead When I try to sleep at night I can only dream in red The outside world is black and white With only one color dead Oh Biko, Biko, because Biko Oh Biko, Biko, because Biko Yihla Moja, Yihla Moja The man is dead You can blow out a candle But you can't blow out a fire Once the flames begin to catch The wind will blow it higher Oh Biko, Biko, because Biko Yihla Moja, Yihla Moja The man is dead And the eyes of the world are Watching now Watching now "What happens now is up to you."

Oddly, I really like most historical prog rock and synth rock. …But I never connected with [any] Genesis at all. Saw ELP in 1974, and have a couple of their albums. Yes and Pink Floyd are regulars in my car. I don't dislike Genesis, and appreciate hearing them on the radio… Listening to the original line up now talk about the Lamb… concept album, one thing they chose was placing it in 1970s New York City. This to set the original Genesis apart from the definitely English-sounding prog rock giants (Yes, ELP - Emerson, Lake, and Palmer, King Crimson, etc..). So a few tracks are meant to be gritty like 70s NYC. They agree “Back in NYC” from the album was as “hard” as Genesis gets while still being a mother to play (according to the band .. probably why Gabriel solo and the remainder of Genesis stopped performing those once they had newer, simpler hits in the ‘80s // it seems to me, anyways). Well here it is .. “The Lamb lays down ..” track gets the most airplay (still) but once in awhile a rock DJ gets a wild hair to play “Back in NYC”. Worth noting the next Phil Collins/led album still has two of its songs “Dancing on a Volcano” and “Squonk” played in decent enough rotation on the classic rock stations I’ve listened to.

I'm weird. Not a fan of Genesis, King Crimson, or Dream Theater. But I love Floyd, Yes, Rush, Tull, etc.

My wife, a singer, did a gig with Chester Thompson some years back. As a big Genesis fan, she was thrilled!

[On] original Genesis .. …would’ve liked to have seen a reunion earlier. Found out there was a one-off reunion in 1982, “Six of the Best”. to raise money for Peter Gabriel’s then fledgling “world music” project. Unfortunately no one planned on professionally recording it … well, besides some amateur mono bootlegs from various audience members recorded and later attempting to clean up audio-wise. Set list was mostly original line up Genesis songs, with Gabriel’s first solo hit “Solsbury Hill” and Collins led Genesis hit “Tonight’s the Night”
