I'm doing a quick hiking trip with my son, probably in the Hunter-Fryingpan Wilderness (I'm picking him up from the train in Glennwood Springs) the third week of July.
I pick him up on a Monday morning, but I need to car camp in the area for 2-3 days of acclimitization to elevation.
If I drive to CO on Friday, finding a site in an official USFS campground may be dicey (unless I can make a reservation).
Anyone willing to share their secrets about possible primitive camping places vaguely in the vicinity of the Lost Man Creek trailhead and campground, which is on CO Hwy 82 between Aspen and Twin Lakes? Or perhaps roughly between there and Glennwood Springs, where I will pick him up?
Thanks.

I camped near the trailhead to La Plata Peak in the 80s. I would imagine the water is still DEADLEY poisonous. Using my JAckson Hole area here as a gauge I'm guessing you will have lots of boondocking company unless the country and Colorado somehow fully reopens by then.

absarokanaut; Are you implying that something you did all those years ago may have rendered the water in the area contaminated? If so, please feel free not to share any further information. The question is probably moot now--I was able to reserve a site at a (probably) not all that awesome USFS campground on the Ruedi Reservoir. I'll use that site, or ditch it if I can find a site at a more scenic first-come-first-served USFS CG.
