Shore bird migration is underway. Someone recently reported a Red Throated Phalarope. I'm guessing on its way south. downriver, do you know what bird is the 3rd from the bottom? I don't want to call myself a birder just yet but I try and these shore birds are just so confusing to me. Most of them look the same unless you know what exactly to look for.

^^^ The heron was actually sleeping; its head was dropped. I focused in and waited for it to wake up and lift its head last night while out hiking. Thx.
Regards,

I have a blue jay that's been hanging around recently. Thinks it's a mockingbird. Mimics red-tailed hawk, golden eagle, osprey, and crows. I actually thought there was an osprey nest in the woods across the creek until I saw the blue jay do it. I pointed at it and say "Hey!" and it squawked at me as if to laugh. Makes lots of other sounds while in my apple tree. Trying to get it to mimic the "yoo-hoo" and "cat call" whistles that I keep sending its way.

I’ve seen and heard this type of behavior by members of the corvid clan; especially Stellar’s jays and crows. They tend to make the red tail sound to scare other birds so they can steal their food. It’s very interesting to see and hear. Stellar’s jays are a very loud and aggressive bird related to blue jays. Beautiful blue-black coloring. Happy Trails, DR

Flaps deployed for landing! Blackwater NWR MD. on a related note; to post this I had to email it off my Apple Photos app to my phone, then save it to my iPhone photos app…. as currently my laptop doesn’t provide a route to directly (via the load photos thing) upload from my MacBook Pro Photos library. Which is a pain since all my bird photos come off my Nikons that I just load into my laptop since my collection exceeded the total capacity that iCloud allows. any suggestions for a more direct route?

Can you export from the photos library to the desktop, as a JPG? That’s what I do from Lightroom, but I haven’t messed with Photos for a long time. Like, not since it was iPhoto. If I get up the energy to get off the couch, I could experiment.

Thanks, I’ll try that at some point, probably save better quality that way than the email route. I’ve not been doing much with birds for a bit, more buildings and black bears (great smoky mountains np) so there’s wasn’t much incentive to poke about. But as fall comes around the local wildlife refuges start to fill. New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland shorelines.
