My old bird feeder was falling apart, so I put up a new one. For half an hour, a male cardinal perched in an adjacent tree and scolded it. After the new feeder was sufficiently taunted, it was reluctantly accepted.

GaliWalker,, either your Great Blues have more color than the ones out west, or I need to look more closely.

... either your Great Blues have more color than the ones out west, or I need to look more closely You need to look more closely...and even then, if you use the naked eye, you won't see it! I never see all the gorgeous subtle colors and details until I get home and look at the pics on my computer (and sometimes when I'm looking through the viewfinder of my DSLR camera and am close enough). That's the magic of a good quality lens.

Also, it occurred to me that the viewing angle and lighting must also have some part to play. e.g. This photo was taken 1hr earlier on the same day, and the heron was further away. You can see some of the more colorful parts, but the distinctive red-brown thighs which (for me) differentiate a Great Blue Heron from a Gray Heron are hidden from view.

I've become a big fan of catbirds. A few catbird pics for you from a couple of weeks back:

Not a bird, but still a flying lifeform, albeit playing dead when I took this: Common Whitetail

I need to get back out there with my new Z8: I’m seeing some amazing bird in flight images from that system.
