Masked Lapwings. Most often seen in pairs, they fly off when we get to about 15 metres. They nest on the ground right in the open so after laying the eggs the spend the next few weeks warding off intruders. However because of that we can get closer to them because they do not fly away. (we keep away at around 7-10 metres) I think this is the male.

Some of you remember this from 15 years ago. This young lady hopped on to my red lawn mower when I was on the Ranch and found me almsot every time I came out of my cabin, the lodge, etc. for about 10 days. Guessing the sound and color of the lawnmower were initial attraction. Photo by Dave I.

Visiting friends yesterday I spotted a new bird . I had no idea at what I was looking at, my sight is still very fuzzy, but I was pretty sure that it wasn't one bird that I knew. Turns out to be a Grey Shrikethrush.

Most of our local raptors are on holiday at the moment but a Brown Falcon was about yesterday. Given that it was trying to hide, I think it's a male.

This is a Grebe from this morning. Straight out of the camera, no processing doe to it, for a change.
and a nearby Blue Billed Duck. Also from his morning and exactly as the camera captured the photo.

Sometime I don't have to leave home. This is a Fantail Cuckoo just above our fence. BTW, back home, in Italy, the cuckoo there do make that cuckoo sound, they don't here.

I think that I mentioned before that I talk to some birds. Mostly Magpies and here are three looking at how to turn that tap on (you press the button !) (the one with the hite ack is the male, the female is looking at the tap and the "baby" is to the left. Yesterday , after playing Peek a Boo with this one he waits there for reptiles to appear. When I see him I go to the other side of the table and alternatively I look over and under it , he does the same. Particularly funny when his mate is there because she just stand there looking at what we are doing. Yeserday after the play he flew just behind me and started to play his song. So I thought of trying to teach him mine whistling a few notes. After a while he tried but then went back to his song. They can talk if raised by hand . listening to my sound :
BTW, the chicks , often one, make a whining noise when they want to be fed. That is most of the day for weeks. The funny part is that now they are all at about the same size as their parents, like the one in the water fountain photo, but still whine as they move about feeding themselves. After that they learn the calls and songs.

Outside my office window. I think a pair of sparrows have a nest in the olive tree over the fence. I started to see two chicks a few days ago. One in particular likes to spend time on the fence over the bird bath so that it can watch other birds coming to drink. This is it beign fed : BTW, we collect and cure the olives on our side of the fence, (very nice) the neighbours don't bother. Waiting for some birds to show up
