Bunker Break 2021.
Out of shape and sporting one-size up, fashionable hiking apparel, enjoyed a long awaited, mild mannered hike to Clear Creek, GCNP, AZ. Weather ran the full gamut from sunny, 70°, light breeze afternoons, to high winds, rain, snow and an overnight freeze. Had delusions of grandeur, envisioning side bar hikes to Cheyava Falls and Angel Gate. Developed slight discomfort in the ACL area and a really tight back strain. A man's got to know limitations. During my three (3) nights in AK9 Clear Creek Threshold zone encountered one (1) hiker. Descended South Kaibab, ascended Bright Angel with a night each at Bright Angel CG and Indian Garden CG. Itinerary offered a bit of socializing. Along the corridor trails overnighters where few, plenty of day hikers though. On the upside, will be at the Salt Lake VA at 06:30 tomorrow for Moderna #2 and the next day a knee MRI and assessment with an ortho wizard. Following are twenty-one photos for your enjoyment. Have another more aggressive permit for April 1st, fingers crossed!
Riding the Hiker Express to the South Kaibab Trailhead.
Mule Team returning from Phantom Ranch after delivering supplies.
Inner Gorge featuring the Colorado River, Silver Bridge, and mouth of Bright Angel Canyon.
The Bright Angel Campground hosts 28,200 user-nights every year.
Clear Creek Trail traverses along the base the Tapeats formation highlighting the Great Unconformity.
The Great Unconformity is a gap in the geologic record spanning more than a billion years.
A beautiful day in the neighborhood (l-r) Cape Royal, Wotans Throne, Angel Gate and The Howlands Butte.
Zoroaster Valley
Ottoman Amphitheater ahead, soon descending into Clear Creek drainage
A dry tributary wash, weather pattern changing, becoming very windy.
Clear Creek
Seating available for mid-morning brunch
Creek flowing well from overnight showers.
The small, overgrown, circular depression and abundance of small stones on the perimeter provide evidence of remnants of an ancient agave roasting pit.
Misty morning with Cardenas Butte and Escalante Butte cross-canyon in the distance.
Early evening tent view
Early morning view of tent
Horizontal light-colored feature at foot of Tapeats is the Great Unconformity
Beginning of Bright Angel Trail after crossing the Colorado on the Silver Bridge.
Overnight snow accents Zoroaster Temple.
A bit of mid-day brightness ascending the Bright Angel Trail
Departing Indian Garden with Red Wall and South Rim ahead.
Wintering near the top!
