But if it gets wet and stuff does happen, you're pretty well screwed. Next to impossible to dry down in a wet climate. Andrew Skurda on his hike circumventing Alaska, found fleece to be superior to down and even synthetics and highly recommends it for wet, cold climates. Just my opinion, mind you. Be interesting to hear what other folks have to say. With fleece, you can wring it out and keep going. I have clothing for hiking which I expect to get wet. I wear synthetic layers while on the move. Fleece would definitely work in those conditions but I wear a shell when it is raining/snowing and can't imagine needing much more than a couple thin layers. At camp, I'll still stick with Down. Each layer has it's benefit. If I had poor waterproofing, I could see wanting only fleece. These days, I only use drybags for my stuff, use a water resistant backpack and use a pack cover if I expect it to be wet. I even went so far as to put my down layers inside of ziplocks, inside of drybags inside of a waterproof backpack in Greenland.
