Good news for the sierra. Backcountry skiing is probably not a good idea for several weeks and watch out for avalanches (possibly some will be slabs) for a long time, maybe late May. www.mammothtimes.com/content/winters-tale

Yes that deep and heavy a single slab is a nasty prospect. It’s connection to the underlying surface is going to be problematic for a very long time as you say. Frontcountry they’ll knock down the trouble zones but in the backcountry there’s going to be risks for the early thru hikers.

It’s connection to the underlying surface is going to be problematic for a very long time as you say. Exactly. The snow that was there before these recent storms has had to have iced over, creating a huge risk.

Drought for Bay Area? San Francisco is in the second driest two-year period in recorded history, and the just ending rainy season is the third driest ever in California. That sobering news came as the annual April 1 Sierra snowpack survey registered a disappointing 59% of the historical average, a low number for the second straight year. That double whammy means the “D” word — drought — will likely be uttered more and more in the months to come and raises the possibility of future water use restrictions in the Bay Area, though local water districts on Thursday expressed hope those won’t be necessary www.mercurynews.com/2021/04/01/sierra-snowpack-at-59-as-rain-snow-seasons-end/

That was quick. The latest District 10 tweet I saw had them mentioning a lot of repaving repair needed. Good in them.

Regarding Tioga Pass - As coming over from the east side, we report to the TM store on May 20th, get our assigned tents, check in, etc...probably road open to employees only, but... The store, (provided/ if /when we get it stocked) is scheduled to open the 28th (maybe the 29th?), but definitely before the holiday... and we will only open if 120/ Tioga is open... so...

District 9 has cleared 120 W to the park gate so it’ll be soon. Iirc I saw the park has plowed to the gate as well but is performing the usual repairs etc. /?d=n

I missed this the first time through. Wow!
After an abnormally warm end of winter, we're having an abnormally cold beginning of spring. We've had more snow the past 2 weeks than the prior 6 weeks.
