I have been looking at the Mont-Bell Peak shell pants as a replacement for my Golite Reeds and have looked at the Peak Shell Jacket here too.
Before the original Peak Shell was discontinued in ~2009 it was a extremely well thought of jacket here though a little heavy at 11oz. It used a 3 layer air permeable construction with a tricot mesh liner and was often compared to eVent.
I am not sure when it returned to the lineup, but it's back, this time as a 9.1oz jacket with slightly shorter pit zips, but in my quest to find reviews and data on the new shell I wondered if the membrane was the same so I emailed MontBell NA and this is what they said:
“The membrane utilized in two iterations of the product is the same, but the finished fabric (nylon & tricot) is different. In laboratory, performance values (water resistance/breathability) are similar: GEN2 20000 mm/15000 g/m2/24 hrs GEN1 25000 mm/15000 g/m2/24 hrs. The NEW fabric is made with 15 denier nylon, while the GEN1 version utilized 12 denier nylon.”
So it appears the membrane is the same between the two generations.
I am buying the pants (4.6oz) to use this summer in the Winds and will report back but the jacket peaks my interest as well.
Does anyone have experience with the jacket or the pants?
My other options are the Westcomb Focus LT that uses 2.5L eVent DVLite but it doesn't have pit zips and I have heard stories of delamination, or the Westcomb Specktor LT which uses the traditional 3 layer eVent but also doesn't have Pitzips (I also only have a choice of black).
