Thanks for the heads-up. I'll be watching.

Astronomy Magazine says that Saturn will appear as close to Jupiter as Jupiter's moons. Of course, it will only be apparent, not actual.

I hope to get some good pictures of that event.

I wonder if one can get conjunctivitis observing the conjunction.
Every 2 years or so a member of another backpacking forum would graciously let the rest know about an imminet sort of end of the world but never too clearly spelled out. Videos and copious links ( from alternative type "scientists") proving the point were posted but somehow, nothing ever happened. So disappointing. BTW, the next one is just around the corner. This sketch would come to mind

I've been watching these two planets each night from about an hour after sunset and for the hour following till the planets set (5:22 to 6:40 PM MST, northern Wyoming). Each night the planets appear a little closer almost directly SW and from about 10° altitude down to the horizon. Of course, Jupiter is easiest to spot and then Saturn slightly above and to the left of Jupiter. Monday evening may bring a few clouds, but I hope to see the conjunction. If anyone can get a good photo, please post it. But tonight and Sunday night will be fun to see also.

I've been scouting out some locations around my house as I live in a wooded hollow next to Beaver Mountain which is west of us. The best I can find is the local cemetery.

I guess we will have to drive east. I think that the mountains will block our view to see the planets so close to the horizon.

I had absolutely horrid seeing last night, with a hot Chinook wind trying to mix down into the cold inversion here on the Plains. This is the best I could muster. Monday is supposed to be perfect.

Saw it, checked it out. Got thinking about what happened when Jupiter and Saturn were that close with a similar really big show 800 years ago more-or-less. The Crusades and their followers were ramped up to do good (or evil) with their swords, Genghis Kahn (Temujin) was horsing around, the Moors were having trouble in Iberia, King John had recently signed the Magna Carta limiting the King of England a bit. And, to think, the Moors, Kind John, Pope Innocent, Saladin, and Genghis all saw what I saw this evening.

I was able to see the event even though clouds moved in fairly early afterward. With the "naked eye," Jupiter and Saturn were distinctly separated. I could easily see the space between them. And even though very near in appearance, they were not very bright. Venus by itself would be quite a bit brighter. It was not really spectacular to see, but historically a bit fascinating because of the rarity.

I used my telescope so we could see both planets in a single lense. I was able to show it to 2 grandsons, one of their wives, our 3 year old great-grand daughter, and my wife. We were on a hill and watched them set behind Beaver Mountain.

Two shots, one way over exposed to show Jupiter's moons
