Get a copy of "Hiking Kentucky's Red River Gorge" by Sean Hill. It will show you all you need to know.

That is a great trail/area to hike. When I did my research to hike a portion of this trail I depended on their own forum. It has tons of information. Since I'm somewhat new here I'm not sure what the rules are for posting links to other hiking forums so Admin can remove it if he wishes. But if you go here www.sheltoweetrace.com/forum/ You'll find all the info you need. These people were really helpful and they have free topo maps to download for all 268 miles of the trail.

I had no idea a continuous trail of this magnitude existed in Kentucky. I am somewhat familiar with the Big South Fork area and its many trails, but I had no idea the Trace connected it with Red River. Must be beautiful.

Well...a whole lot of the Sheltower is road walking, especially on the northern end. A lot of the roads are gravel or FS, but it's still a road. The ST isn't 260 continuous miles thru the trees.
