Hiya Everyone,
Hope I've posted this in the right place (finally as I twice posted it in the wrong place now, whoops!)
I am moving to Malaysia in a couple of months time. In the summer I have 6 weeks off and I really want to get a backpack on and explore some of Asia on foot. I would like to do a trek that lasts 7-12 days ish. I've never done anything longer than one day before, these have always been around the fells in The Lake District or Northumberland (UK) so although I am used to some big hills there's been nothing major. I can use a compass, I can read and map and I can camp. I have seen a few treks in Nepal that interest me and I am considering those, however I really want to have the opportunity to sleep out under the stars and so I was hoping to go somewhere that camping is the norm rather than guesthouses, although that's by no means the most important thing. Have you any suggestions of somewhere scenic? I'd quite like to go somewhere mountainy.
Thanks
Anna

Sorry, I don't have any info about Asia (other than Japan is really nice), but perhaps you could shed some light on things to see in Northumberland? I'm putting together some UK trip details which includes a stop up in Berwick-upon-Tweed, where part of my family originated.

Sorry, I don't have any info about Asia (other than Japan is really nice), but perhaps you could shed some light on things to see in Northumberland? I'm putting together some UK trip details which includes a stop up in Berwick-upon-Tweed, where part of my family originated. Oh I'd be happy to. I don't know Berwick itself too well, it's very far north in Northumberland, I have been there but not for a long time. It has a beautiful railway bridge going into it and if you happen to catch a train from Newcastle there then it's a lovely train ride along the coastal route. Northumberland itself is stunning, I absolutely love it. Because of all of the wars with the Scots in years gone by, it claims more castles and fortified buildings than any other county in England, my favourites are Warkworth, Alnwick (of Harry Potter and Downton Abbey fame) and Bamburgh (recently in MacBeth). There is also Hadrian's Wall which marked the furthest northern reach of the Roman empire and once stretched from Wallsend (very near to where I am from) to the west coast, that's actually a very popular hike in itself. If you have ever seen Robin Hood Prince of Thieves then part of that was filmed there (Sycamore Gap, Twice Brewed). There are loads of lovely little market towns (Morpeth, Alnwick) and smaller villages dotted all over the place. Lindesfarne Island is worth a visit too but can only be accessed at certain times of the day due to the tide. If you get the chance to have a few days in the lake district then take it, it's so beautiful, of all the places I have been to in the world it is my favourite. There is a fell near Keswick called Cat Bells, on a clear day you get the most beautiful views from it, Ullswater is also beautiful and there are some lovely walks around Patterdale (which tends to be quieter) and Glenridding, if you head out that way then Google 'Alfred Wainwright' as he wrote many guidebooks for the area which contain his beautiful hand drawn maps and pictures of the scenery. You can also visit Wordworth's cottage in Grasmere or go to Hilltop, where Beatrix Potter lived and wrote many of her children's stories. By far the best city to visit (not that I am biased) is Newcastle upon Tyne, although it's small enough to do in a day. Lovely quayside with beautiful old and new bridges going across the River Tyne which has played a very important part in British history and was the centre of coal exportation and ship building for centuries. Grey Street has some of the most beautiful Georgian architecture and I think was voted Britain's best street not all that long ago. We have a wonderful football team with the most loyal and passionate fans, get yourself there for a home game and you'd be sure to have a great day out (although they tend to lose a lot). I am from a little town at the coast called Whitley Bay, although it's a little run down at the moment, there is a lovely stretch of coast from Whitley Bay Lighthouse through to Tynemouth, it's an hours walk and is lovely. Back in Northumberland, another lovely stretch of coast is Low Newton to Craster, this passes by an imposing old ruin called Dunstanburgh Castle and there is a beautiful pub in Craster which serves the most delicious crab soup or sandwiches. I'm making myself homesick here so I am going to stop now lol! But I hope this is useful and if you have any questions or anything then let me know and I will do my best to answer them. You'll have a lovely time in the North East of England, its stunningly beautiful and the Geordies are the nicest people in the world...if I do say so myself.

Lived and worked in Malaysia at one time. Did lots of day hikes. Many were off, off trail. Leeches the primary inconvenience. Long pants tucked into full size boots and Baygon sprayed on boots best deterrent. The Brits left "hill stations" which can provide some hiking.
Most enjoyable holidays were 7 day sidebar trips to Sumatra and Java which were in actuality local travel by bus and rented scooter and included peakbagging a few overnighter volcanos. Somewhat more cultural than backpacking or hiking.
Invested most time in understanding the multiple cultures, Malay, Cantonese, Hokkien, Tamil, Baba-Nyonya and Orang Asli. The food is awesome. I worked diligently to not be a typical westerner or "orang puteh" or worse "Mat Saleh".
Good luck!

Thanks AnnaB. That is some invaluable inside info and have rightly stashed it away for one of those few non-rainy UK days.

Well I can suggest Sam sand dunes in Jaisalmer Rajasthan, as you did mention that you want to spend a night under the sky. So Sam has like 3-5 km of 30-60 mts dunes where you will have desert camps, safari tours and also the local cuisine here is amazing. You can get more information on Sam sand dunes at this link - Sam sand dunes. Hope I was able to assist. Regards, Pratap
