Every year a big group of us get a cabin out in the Canaan Valley in West Virginia. We eat a lot of good food, play a lot of board games and get some winter hiking in. We always hope for enough snow to snowshoe. This year, we were about five days too early, but we still got some good hiking in. On Saturday, we went out to Blackwater Falls and hiked the road from the sled hill past Lindy Point towards Table Rock. We didn't make it all the way to Table Rock, but it was a pleasant walk. We did about 10 miles total, out and back. The view from Lindy Point. It was blustery and cold out here - no surprise. Crossing the second stream that intersects the road. Hiking in the cloud. By this time, it was sleeting steadily. On Sunday, we hiked up into Dolly Sods. It was a bit colder and about halfway up, all of the trees were covered in hoar frost. Hoar frost on a leaf Dolly Sods covered in ice and a little snow. Canaan Valley to the west of Dolly Sods It wasn't the worst weather I've ever seen in winter up there. It was probably in the mid-20s and light snow fell occasionally. Near the edge of the plateau, it was windy, but it was pretty mild for Dolly Sods.

Thanks for posting these photos and report! The Canaan Valley is among my favorite winter locations.Too bad you missed the big storm while there or there would have been some epic snowshoeing. The winter hiking looked fun though, and the scenery spectacular...

Yeah, we missed out on some prime snowshoeing up there this week. We've been up in Dolly Sods in previous years when there has been three feet of snow on the ground. It is spectacular. I almost like the Sods more in winter than in summer (although blueberry season...).
