Last time I went to REI they had large MSR isobutanes but no other fuel. They said they just put them out and would be gone by end of day. I was in my local REI yesterday and all they had were Jetboil cannisters; which I believe do work with other stoves.

zeke, your shepherd’s pie sounds a lot like my hamburger gravy on mashed potatoes, only with a few more veggies (I might add more veggies...). I make my own hamburger gravy, and cook it with onions, garlic, and bell peppers, also often mushrooms before drying (all those veggies rehydrate well).

I'd say that when I boil stuff, I only use HAA pans as I can wipe it out when warm.

I make my own. One pack is homemade hamburger gravel, mixed veggies and a gravy mix. The other is the mashed potatoes.

It's so good a black bear visited me for dinner in the Sangre de Cristo's this summer. I hope the bear wasn't too demanding. Funny--I've tromped all over the Sangres and never seen a bear there. My trip there in Sept was very snowy, so it was even easier than usual to see game sign. There was elk and bear sign everywhere, but I never saw either animal. (My first camp was so full of fresh bear sign--tracks and scat--that I almost considered not camping there, but I was so whipped from hiking in deep slushy snow that I said (paraphrasing) "screw it.")

trinity I don't pay $13 for any supper on the trail. My entire day's allotment of food won't cost that much usually. I got a little sticker shock on this myself. That looks very tasty...but no, $13 a serving is too high.

I recently tried making a chicken vindaloo with FD chicken and potatoes. I cheated in a way. I added a squeeze of tomato paste from a tube and some olive oil. Going for tasty instead of super light.
I just realized the olive oil might be a good idea for the shepherds pie recipe.
