In light of the variety thread from yesterday, I was reminded that I have not taken mashed potatoes on the trail for a number of years now. When considering bringing them along again, I recalled how much I liked Shepherd's pie while in Scotland. So, I looked up where to find some veggies to put in it, and found most of them are available at my local Bulk Nation, and a couple of the mixed veggies also appealed to me, particularly the Hot ones. OK, so I have the freeze dried beef cubes, the potatoes, and now the veggies. I will be adding in some beef gravy powder and hope to have something edible. It does seem like I will need to do the beef and the veggies separately from the potatoes, and perhaps the gravy last, to pour over the glop. Any other suggestions about the prep?

trinity I don't pay $13 for any supper on the trail. My entire day's allotment of food won't cost that much usually.

I don't pay $13 for any supper on the trail. Totally get it. I rarely manage more than 20 bag nights a year these days, so the expense doesn't seem that much to me. Plus I'm at a point in life where time is a lot harder to come by than money....

Any other suggestions about the prep? I believe in the other thread you said you were planning for a paddling trip. If the weight of fuel and a covered pot aren't an issue then simmering your stew for a while might be something to consider. Everything will hydrate better and blend more into a stew.

I am revisiting a bunch of Packit meals soon for review - and their Shepherds one of them.

Mt. House but there has been a run on the stuff so they are currently out of stock. tomas They also have ground beef, & chicken. It is in #10 cans, but I vacuum pack any leftover and put it in the freezer until needed. I buy my powdered gravy mix in the grocery.

I've used potato flakes, dried veggie mix (sold as a snack), gravy powder, beef jerky, and a spice mix (I like sage, onion, rosemary, celery).
Add water to veggie mix and jerky an hour before dinner. Boil. Drain some liquid to make the gravy. Use the remainder for the potatoes. Mix then put gravy on the top. Bon appetit!

I'm still learning the art of water amount/hydration with these multipart homebrews.

Mt. House but there has been a run on the stuff so they are currently out of stock. I've been to the local outfitter five times since the beginning of March. At the start of the pandemic, the shelves were picked bare of every sort of food and fuel. Stores all closed not long after, and shelves were still bare after they reopened, but I stumbled on them just as big delivery came in. I assumed it was somewhat back to normal, but was surprised to see them bare again on my last two visits.

I stumbled on them just as big delivery came in. Last time I went to REI they had large MSR isobutanes but no other fuel. They said they just put them out and would be gone by end of day.

Shepard Pie! My favorite is MaryJane'sFarm Shepard PieField tested two new Packit meals this week, Pasta Beef Bolognese and Southwest Corn and Black Bean Salad. The Pasta Beef Bolognese was excellent for car camping situations. It requires a nine minute boil. Tastes great......... but nine minute pasta/olive oil boil is inefficient fuel consumption. The resulting dirty pot excludes it from use in the field. I hate washing/cleaning pots in the field. Disqualified item for future use. Put my glasses on and noticed the kayaker on the packaging and said to myself, "Best dinner on a float trip!" The Southwest Corn and Black Bean Salad was an awesome dish. Cold soaked and delicious, uses minimal water, so great on long distance hikes where fuel and water conservation issues may apply. The only downside is the 90 minute cold soak lead time. Taste, minimal water and ease offset the wait, plus! I will add this to my maintained backcountry food inventory. I am a huge fan of the Cajun Ranch and Texas Mesquite Chicken Salad entrees. Fast, easy, minimal water, no cook. The new packaging is trimmed down nicely also. The Tuscan Beef Stew & Italian Polenta is a favorite, on trail celebratory meal after a great day. It's so good a black bear visited me for dinner in the Sangre de Cristo's this summer.
