My favorite day pack right now is a Mountainsmith Lumbar Tour. It has a good hip belt and a set of compression straps that sucks the pack into the lumbar region and really holds it there. It also has a shoulder strap that can be used to help stabilize the load over the side of his good collarbone. Or don’t use that at all. The Tour is 9 L and I can get a liter of water, insulation, rain gear, closed cell foam sit pad, food, a small pot and stove and all the essentials. They make a bigger, 13 L model that some even backpack with. He would have to turn ultralight with that bag. I couldn’t quite use it for that myself. But for day hiking it is supremely comfortable.

I'm going to look into those bags, swiftdream and ErnieW. My daughter currently carries the daypack, and if they backpacked, I am sure she would carry most of the gear. But if the boyfriend could carry his layers, snacks and water, that would be a great thing.

I routinely use a bike messenger bag on dayhikes around Yosemite’s Tuolumne Meadows etc. most recently one from TimBuk 2 www.timbuk2.com/Outer layers, ten essentials plus extra camera gear. All easily within reach without having to put it down on the ground (or sidewalk in cities) as I would a pack. Thiugh for overnights I would still think an external properly fitted would be the best option: load carrying in the hips being superior to one shoulder. Otoh iirc there are some larger lumbar load carrying offerings from Mystery Ranch that are large enough to be worth looking at. www.mysteryranch.com/Here’s two big ones? www.mysteryranch.com/Packs/Fire/Hotshots-HandcrewCould be useful to give them a call. Plan B? Call McHale custom backpacks. mchalepacks.com/

This is a review for the Mountainsmith Lumbar Day, slightly bigger pack, I saw when buying the Mountainsmith Lumbar Tour. Good review with excellent photos. www.carryology.com/bags/mountainsmith-day-lumbar-pack-drive-by/They have slightly changed the pack but still looks pretty much the same. I use it a lot like HSF says, using the shoulder strap to hold up the pack while getting something out and not putting the pack down or sometimes keep on moving. I find the hip belt to be hiking/backpacking grade, much better than any of the messenger bags I’ve used. My back stays way cooler than when wearing any of my more standard packs.

I have my MountainSmith butt pack that I bought in 1986 I believe. It is still my day to day pack in the car and for light/short hikes.

I also have an older Mountainsmith Lumbar Day, somewhere around 20 years old. That one was retired when I went with the smaller Tour which was on a great sale at the time the newer models were coming out. They are indeed for the minimalist.
