Unless I missed it, there hasn't been any comment on the passing of Frederick Nathaniel "Toots" Hibbert, frontman of Toots and the Maytals. He died on 9/11 at 77 of complications of COVID-19 after being in a medically induced coma since some time in August.
He had a powerful and moving voice, reminiscent of Otis Redding. I saw him once in concert, in 1980 or 1981, which was everything I hoped it would be.

I saw them in 2011 at the Gathering of the Vibes. This is sad news.

In 1972, "The Harder They Come" played at the Student Union at SUNY Buffalo, and we all went to see it. This was the movie that introduced Jamaican music to the US. This inspired us to visit Jamaica, which we did winter break. We traveled to Negril, and stayed at Bud and Toby's, on the cliffs. No electric in our little cabin, propane heat for the showers, and the nearest pay phone was down the road in Savannah-La-Mar. Dinner outdoors at Erica's. The Harder They Come soundtrack featured Jimmy Cliff, The Wailers, The Maytals, Burning Spear, and we were hooked. I still remember seeing The Wailers in Central Park when they opened up with "Concrete Jungle"

I am a fan of the undeniable beat. RIP Toots, you made me happy many times and will again.
