Novices with not much of a clue, apparently.
I've backpacked in the Porkies at least half a dozen times. Compared to other wilderness areas the trails are well marked & maintained, and not very difficult.

Novices with not much of a clue, apparently. I've backpacked in the Porkies at least have a dozen times. Compared to other wilderness areas the trails are well marked & maintained, and not very difficult. Agree. I've hiked there numerous times and yes they are well marked and relatively easy. So, to have all the emergencies sure speaks to rookies not having much of a clue leading to carelessness. Probably got hurt walking from the parking lot to the visitors center. The kayak part was something.

I wouldn't think they were Michigan natives or folks familiar with Lake Superior and its volatility (especially in November) and apparently were unaware of how dangerous the Lake can be. And that's not a starter lake for someone just learning to kayak. I'm guessing they weren't aware of the various kinds of kayaks and their suitability either.
It's unfortunate that the desire to get out in the wild turned out badly for some, and more work for SAR teams.
