I am planning to hike the 50 mile section of the Ouachita Trail at the start of November. When I hiked this in April 2000, there was not much water in the section. Does anyone know the current water situation? I know that streams don't just appear, but is this a good year water-wise or has it been dry?

My favorite part...We only live 100 miles north of there, it would be cool to meet you at the Queen for dinner or something, depending on your date of hiking.

Oh yeah, water. I haven't been down there this year, but I know they have had above average rainfall, so the creeks in the bottoms should have water, but much of the trail is ridge hiking which makes it tough. There is a Forest Service campground at Winding Stair which should have water.

Don't know about this year, but here is my TR of that section from a few years back: link. Photobucket ruined the photos when they changed their hosting policies. I would expect to find a fair amount of water in November, plus there were jugs of water at most of the shelters along the trail when I was there. I got a shuttle from Michael at Ouachita Trail Guide, he was very helpful and gave me helpful information. If you pose your question on their Facebook page, he might give you some info. And if you need a shuttle, I can recommend this company. If you haven't been since 2000, you may be surprised at all the new shelters along the trail. You could pretty easily hike this section of trail without a tent, if you wanted to.

If you haven't been since 2000, you may be surprised at all the new shelters along the trail. I'll check water in the FB group. In 2000 there were exactly zero shelters in the Oklahoma section. There probably weren't any at all on the entire trail except maybe Oak Mountain or Big Bear shelter. I will check into the Shuttle. My current shuttle contact is a kayaking outfitter on Lake Ouachita, not really anywhere near Talimena.
