Not much of a TR, and not much of a pair of hikes. But I have been pleased the last two Sundays to get out local and do a couple of modest hikes. This is partly because back on Dec. 26 I sprained my left ankle, so I've been slowly coming back. Needless to say, I was very careful out there, and used poles, something I don't ordinarily do on dayhikes. On the 10th, I hiked at Purissima Creek Open Space, near Half Moon Bay. This was once known, in our family, as Banana Slug World, where we counted a couple of hundred slugs in a mile. It was good to see that there was water in the creek, after our drought. I saw fungus: And even one of our ow (he ran away from me. Chicken): There were quite a few people out on the trails that day for some reason (maybe because it wasn't actually raining?). Yesterday I hiked in Huddart Park, and had the trails to myself, though I did get rained on. As a result, I only got one semi-decent photo: Nothing special. Just me, hiking with some big trees (and in places on the 10th, in some coastal scrub).

Since I attended UCSC, I have a special place in my heart for Banana slugs...

Nice area. Too green for me, though. Hurts my eyes.

Looks like a beautiful place. I've been to California a few times but unfortunately never really left the coast. Definitely need to explore some redwoods one of these days.

Redwoods are amazing. The color and texture of the bark, and the pervasive sense of agelessness is almost beyond compare. Thanks for the photos Rebecca; love 'em.

These are coastal redwoods, just south of San Francisco. Banana Slug World is within 2 miles of the coast. Thanks for the photos Rebecca; love 'em. You're welcome. These are all taken with the iPhone, so not top-notch. I miss a lot of photos using the phone. But I was so focused on getting out there and not hurting myself that I forgot my new camera--both times! (Though probably just as glad not to have taken it out in the rain).

Nice area. Too green for me, though. Hurts my eyes. LOL! You should have seen it all a few months ago. Though I admit I have gotten kind of attached to more dry and open landscapes myself.

Twisted ankle oops. About the time I was nursing what made have been a hairline fracture behind my left big toe. Been up that trail ur old gravel road a couple times myself and yeah lots of slugs. Funny how just about anything crawling in those forests moves slow, the newts, the slugs, the centipedes. Sunday was down in a very similar looking park in Aptos, Forest of the Nicene Marks. Will post a TR in a day or so with some of my shots of Fetid Adder's Tongue. You'd enjoy the easy Aptos Creek Road trail. Lots of joggers, trail bikes, puppies on leashes, gals pushing baby strollers, and day hikers.

I've moved on back to my more usual narrow and rough trails Still a little fragile, or at least prone to soreness in the ankle, but no longer paranoid. I don't care for busy trails I think we ran in Forest of Nicene Marks once, many many years ago (BC?). Don't usually get that far away on day trips.
