My ears barely know the difference between $50 speakers and $500 ones. Can't imagine what differences I wouldn't hear from $5000 speakers.

The world is full of diminishing returns. Especially when it comes to cables.

Thanks for the tip. I just ordered the 10' pair for $33,900.00. And they gave me a discount on shipping!

And I thought "Monster Cable" was expensive... the company is based in Boulder, CO the world capital of hipsters...they need it to hook their $6,000 pre amp and $15,000 power amp up to their $12,500 (each) speakers and sit around discussing how much better the vinyl albums, that they bought at the flea market for $0.50 sound compared to a CD.....

I have a friend who is the sound engineer for Dark Star Orchestra. A Grateful Dead inspired band and very into their audio. Anyway he has perfect pitch and can hear the jaggedness of a standard 10,000 Hz CD. His ears can hear this kind of difference.
Also I see they refer to this as a reference system. I think that means it has to be close to perfect across its whole range. More than even the most demanding audiophile expects. Good for high end speaker, mixing boards, preamps, etc. manufacturers. Business expense.

I wonder if the cables are phase matched.

I wonder if the cables are phase matched. I've been losing my mind trying to get phase matched wideband RF cables manufactured. Things tend to go south when they put the back shells on the connectors.

Things tend to go south when they put the back shells on the connectors. I'm not involved with things like that anymore, but I used to have a good high quality manufacturer for important/complicated cables, and a less expensive manufacturer for less important/simpler cables. I can only remember the "bad" one now.
ETA: This MIGHT have been the good one. It's definitely not the lesser one.

All this technology makes me even more impressed with Beethoven as he continued to compose during deafness and afterwards, compensating and still producing masterpieces.

My husband used to be Normal-ish as far as music, listened to his stereo or car radio when he had time, but thirty years teaching music and judging festivals changed how he listens, not just that his hearing is worse due to band classes but how he listens and thinks about music. Now he wants talk radio or quiet at home, and while thinking about music he can’t communicate a song to me if he doesn’t know the words. I can’t explain what he does instead of humming. It’s more verbal and syllables and he does it, and then “what song is that?” And my son and I are baffled, but our 6 year old granddaughter, if she knows the song can tell him. It also led to a game they play like name that tune, by clapping a rhythm, and they understand each other but it never sounds like the rhythm of the song both swear it is.

echo , I'm wondering if he's listening to music at a different level, as an instructor would as opposed to a music aficionado? I think there's a big difference from listening to music for relaxation and/or analyzing it while listening. I've tried the latter, and find that I become less focused on the music overall, but more on the style, etc.
