Was there any evidence that it was ever anchored to the ground? My first guess is some sort of hitching post.

I think the long crossing piece was the top, with the shorter ones being on the ground. Had it been taller, I might've guessed an attempt at making a food hang to protect it from bears, but 6 feet isn't tall enough.

Yeah, I thought of that at first. But, you're right it's not tall enough. Plus, no matter which end was up, it wouldn't have been stable enough to stand on it's own.

Bushcraft. Shelter frame. You could let it free stand and either use rafter poles or a tarp or both. My guess.

Where do the knots point? They don't look old enough to have been the work of anyone attempting a 'direction tree deformation' - so, the work of evil denizens of the woods with a wiccan bent?

Bushcraft. Shelter frame. You could let it free stand and either use rafter poles or a tarp or both. My guess. Those thoughts align with mine. The structure looks like a makeshift ridge beam for a tarp or tent structure. The smaller horizontal cross pieces with angle braces would be used at the bottom only because the upright poles are not being placed in post holes. Edit to add: Bushcraft books going back decades show various similar structures. Anyone with some carpentry experience might adjust the framework for their own unique purposes. Leaving the structure there doesn't seem compatible with LNT, but bushcraft itself is not very compatible with LNT.

The long crossbar is the top. The two shorter crossbars are the bottom. The latter are currently twisted 90 degrees from their functional position as feet to hold up the whole structure. You can see that clearly by the location of the two braces on the long crossbar--one twisted to the back, the other to the front. No idea what it would be used for.

It wouldn't really be bushcraft if they brought along tools and drills and used bolts to make the frame. Not in my mind, anyway.

The general side of the tree the twisted limbs were on was south and southwest. Here is another twisted one, and a "horseshoe" shaped one that was turned upside down. I turned it right side up so that the tree wouldn't lose its good luck.

Bushcraft books going back decades show various similar structures. The thing about this structure was that it was an area that one could drive to and next to a remote camp. Unless it was for practice, it wouldn't really be useful bushcraft.

The latter are currently twisted 90 degrees from their functional position as feet to hold up the whole structure. That is a good assessment and makes sense. Except for that fact that all of the segments of wood had been bolted together with rather large bolts and couldn't be twisted in any direction.
