Yellowstone NP group trip August 20-28 and August 24-28 Cancelled
Sadly, this morning I had to shut down our group trips into Yellowstone NP this year. There were five BPBC Forums folks still on board. The shorter Element 2, two nights in the back country group, had dwindled to one person last night. And in doing some outreach for the recon trip for July 30th, it became blindingly apparent that in 30 days, things are going to get worse here in Wyoming and Montana. I could not secure a “landing” area in or out of the Park for folks to arrive and depart with enough slack if things go wrong. And things do go off schedule and worse. Amplify that with a lot of us do not know each other except through me. Not bad if these were standard times, even fun, but these are not normal times.
Last night I had a call with one of the hikers that had signed up for Element 2 in our Yellowstone plans. The friend is healthcare professional in the area and offered some insight into the real conditions regionally in WY and MT in healthcare and the local pandemic response. A second call this morning was with a friend who lives in one of the Montana gateway communities that has been a tour guide and outfitter in Yellowstone NP been on the ground this month as a professional photographer. Four of the group had multi state travel issues.
I am not taking down the Goggle group used to organize the venture. There is a lot good stuff up there for us to use later. The feeling post shut down is similar to when I worked in the oilfield when it was a constant build up and then layoff everybody because of markets and demands that we could not control.

Sorry to hear this. Those sounded like really great trips. I worked in the park several seasons and have been itching to get back there.

I know the feeling. More than 1/2 my group just canceled for a week in the Winds starting Sept 6. Just too nervous to travel. Multistate travel issues are a slight concern (we're based in CT) but WY isn't on the list though UT is for people flying into SLC. I am still coming unless there is a complete shutdown in WY, which seems very improbable.
What I've been able to see online, Jackson and the parks are still in good shape, just a slight uptick in cases, with tourist volumes almost back to normal, though air traffic is down substantially. I am wearing a N95 for the transit but having a difficult time finding appropriate trip insurance to cover costs for the worst case of getting infected while there and having to quarantine for 2 wks.
I would expect rates to go up just with the volume of visitors, but how bad is it expected to get and what is the confidence in those projections?

www.stjohns.health/coronavirus-info/daily-updates/We have a mask order here in Jackson and the county commisioners should be voting on one next week. Given what is happening across the country and the fact we get people from all over the country, including many that refuse to mask up, I think we just might see some significant increases in the coming weeks. Old Bill, I am guessing you will enter on the West side of the Winds; there are a lot of restricitons in place on the Resrvation which was hit REALLY hard and they have had a significant number of deaths.

Thanks Absarokanaut! Will check that link frequently. Hope the measure passes. Wearing a mask in public places is just common decency. It works. I hope the numbers are kept in check. They will definitely rise but hopefully not spike.
I'd be nervous about bathrooms at the parks, but that applies to state parks here in CT too!! Signs clearly posted to wear a mask and clearly ignored by almost everyone.
The group was supposed to go to Titcomb (first time to the Winds). I hope to fish some remote lakes out of Lander the prior week so I'll make certain to check reg's there too. Will be in Dubois just before group comes to dayhike with my girlfriend. Probably swing back to Lander after to hike Wind River Peak before heading to GTNP to camp. Haven't figured out yet where to take my nephew yet for final 2 weeks in Sept. Definitely not on the Rez.

Old Bill I used to live and work outside Dubois and know a lot of great dayhiking in the NE wind River Range and along my beloved "South absaroka Wall." Among other things I hike several 11,000'+ summits that are dayhiked pretty easily. Happy to share some photos and routes with you if you're interested.

Thanks Absarokanaut! Will send a PM. This year is tough to be sure. Only 3 people left from the 13 that signed up for Titcomb this February. My GF and nephew (if his company allows him to visit Wyoming) are still determined to come. Not sure about camping at even the good RV parks this year due to shared bathrooms. Almost wish I'd get a mild case of COVID to get some immunity and be done with it!
