Heading to the sawtooths this September. On a previous trip, did the Alice/Toxaway loop and loved it.
This year debating either doing:
A) Redfish to Alpine lake, camp night 1...day hike to baron lakes...camp night 2 at alpine, then hike out.
or
B) Hell roaring TH to Imogene lake, camp night 1...day hike to Edith lake, camp at imogene night 2, then hike out
Preference is for a great campsite with good views...Also have some members that flyfish, if one of the lakes is better...
Any thoughts appreciated.
Also looking for day hike options...we will likely hike to sawtooth lake one day, then possibly considering an easy hike to bench lakes...any other great recommendations in the 6-9 mile round trip range?
thanks

I would use Sawtooth Transportation to pick you up at your car at Redfish Lodge then drop you off at Palmer Lake. Hike up to Twin Lakes, then go to Toxaway, then either Edith Lake or Hidden Lake, then Cramer Lake, then Baron Lake then out to catch water taxi at upper end of Red Fish Lake. The strip of land at Cramer Lake is one of the best spots in the Rockies.

So last years trip was canceled due to quarantine restrictions, and instead a backpack trip to the avalanche lake area of the Adirondack was substituted. This year sawtooths are a go. I am starting the detailed trip planning in earnest now. As always, trying to strike the right balance between reasonable ,distances, breathtaking campsite, and now also some fly fishing opportunities.
For those reading, our previous 3 day 2 night loop trip of Alice -toxaway ….toxaway being night one, is one of the top 5 loop hikes I have done in 25 years of trips.
While some of my group would love to re-do that hike, I am evaluating as many options as possible. With those two lakes as my datapoint, does anyone want to give opinions on others hikes, lake campsights or short backpack loops to consider.
The Alice/toxaway mileage, elevation etc are right in our comfort zone. 6-9 miles per day, 1000-2000’ elevation gain, on well maintained trails. 2 nights Is usually the preferred trip length, but we can consider two single night trips in different areas or can consider a 4 day three night trip.
From my research
We will definitely hike to sawtooth lake this trip. Do people feel this is a better day hike, or is it worth camping there?
Any thoughts on imogene lake camping, and spending 1 or two nights there . I am definitely leaning towards seeing imogene, but not sure if I would come in from hell roaring or petit lake.
Lastly, thoughts on Cramer lakes or saddleback lake. This is an 7 day trip to the sawtooths. WE usually get two days for day hiking and then use 3 or 4 days for backpacking, and then save one day for touristy/relaxation things.
Any input is appreciated.
