For those who use alcohol fuel for cooking, how do you get resupplied with alcohol fuel? Do any services at Onion Valley have alcohol for sale? I'm assuming you can't legally mail alcohol fuel. Bob

NOBO or SOBO? I think MTR is the southernmost vendor of alcohol. Even if you hiked out over Kearsarge, it is still 13 miles to Independence. I can't recall if any stores there sold HEET or alcohol. My own plan was to carry enough to get me from MTR to Whitney Portal. In my case, that was 10 ounces. I only heated water for dinner, and only for the entree. That fuel allowance was enough for me to have a couple of days spare.

northbound. On a typical 7 day backpack I use 24 oz. (for two people. I cook coffee for breakfast, pasta for dinner.

24 ounces for 2 people isn't a bad shared load. You also might look into dehydrating your cooked pasta so it hydrates with less water, or use rice noodles and / or angel hair. More planning for less actual cooking, or using a twig stove where you can. Otherwise, that is a lot of ounces for fuel.
ETA: Turns out there is a little store attached to the Chevron Station that sells HEET in the yellow bottle. If you hitchhike out to Independence, it is a couple of blocks North of where you would intersect 395.

Vermillion Valley Resort says they carry alcohol. Can't remember if Muir Trail Ranch does - you'd have to email. Red's Meadow would have it.

Both MTR and VVR had alcohol when I thru-hiked the JMT in 2009. But as toejam notes, confirm via email rather than counting on it. Can't speak for Red's Meadow, when I hiked SOBO I personally delivered a resupply to the store there in which I included alcohol.
