We're planning a return trip to the Aero Lakes region. I'm thinking of heading Southeast from Fossil Lake to Lake of the Clouds, Gallery Lake, Lake of the Winds, Marianne Lake. Get a bit more offtrail travel in. Any info on that route?

I'm listening, too! I've been trying to map out something in that area. Mostly to the north and west of Fossil so far, but I'm looking SE as well.

It's certainly doable: off-trail, hard work, requires routefinding, yada, yada, yada. But it's beautiful, awesome country, the essence of the Beartooths IMHO, etc.

I have done that route and it's straightforward. Leave Fossil Lake and head southeast to a small un-named lake around 10120ft. There's a small saddle of rock and grass ledges to get over and once over you'll drop into a small valley. If you go southwest this will lead to Lake of the Clouds. I did not do that. I continued southeast over another grassy saddle to Gallery Lake. There;s good camping at a small lake north of Gallery. Stayed there and did a daytrip up to Red Rocks. Very Scenic. From Gallery it's over another small saddle to Lake of the Winds. I went around the south side and descended a doable gully down to Mariane Lake. Lots of good camping along the western shoreline. From there I continued east along the southern shore over to Otter Lake.
It's all great country. Enjoy.

What OffTrail said. Came down from Red Rocks Lake and camped at the saddle between Gallery Lake and Lake of the Winds last year. It is a pretty straight shot from Fossil to Gallery Lake, just up a steep little area just past the unnamed lake and that will drop you into a nice valley, with another saddle to cross to get to Gallery Lake. Here are a couple of pics, the first is looking over the unnamed lake towards Fossil Lake and Granite Peak, the second would likely be your route - Gallery Lake is in center left of the picture and your route would run from there to the upper right of the picture, which is approximately where the first picture was taken.
