Thanks, both of you. I was hoping that September would be a good time of year but being 20 hours away and only hiked in CO once I was not sure. You people who actively go hiking in the Rockies on a regular basis since they are so close to you are truly blessed. We'll go prepared but I'm probably not bringing snowmobile boots. So September it is. I'm by no means experienced in backpacking real mountains so if there is anything to be aware of besides monsoons my ears are open. Last time I was there it rained every day starting about 4pm. I've never spent so much time in my tent as on that trip.

But later September is often some sort of hunting season. I've never had any issues sharing the backcountry with hunters, but I try to always have some blaze orange. I've got one of those mesh vests that weighs almost nothing and can go over me and/or my pack.

They will pretty much go through September. Rifle season usually begins on Columbus Day weekend.

So this morning I got out my La Garita Wilderness map. I was doing some looking am wondering what the road conditions are getting to either/both the Middle Fork TH and the South Fork Saguache TH.
While I have a hike in mind I'm wondering if anyone here can recommend a nice 3/4/5 day loop hike that is somewhat easy to moderate either in the La Garita Wilderness or someplace else. I'm looking in La Garita simply because I've been here before and I have the map. I say somewhat easy to moderate full well knowing that this is the mountains. I'm saying that because my nephew and his wife are somewhat new to multiday hikes and I really want them to enjoy it.
At the moment I'm thinking of an easy out&back using either of the trail heads mentioned to the base of Half Moon pass and use that as a basecamp for a couple of days. It was gorgeous last time I was there but who knows if the cattle have found it and turned it into cow patty land.
I'm open to any suggestions. I know when I say "somewhat easy to moderate" that its somewhat subjective jus keep in mind that all people involved live at 1000ft or less.

Rifle season starts around Columbus Weekend. Before that is archery and muzzle-loading.
Halfmoon Pass has been mentioned. I enjoyed a hike in to Wheeler Geological Area (former national monument). From there, you can go over the pass into the wilderness.
