HEET has a slight edge with availability at all-night gas stations in the middle of nowhere. I have to say that I could not find it or a matching product in such a gas station in British Columbia. All of the products there had petroleum products. Another option is to distill hand sanitizer--I found instructions for that on line (after our rather nasty experience of burning a blend of product that included some petrol).

Isn't HEET just methanol, or mostly methanol?

Isn't HEET just methanol, or mostly methanol? I believe so. As is the denatured alcohol at the hardware store, which costs much less.

Isn't HEET just methanol, or mostly methanol? Yellow Heet is methanol (the right stuff). Red Heet is isopropanol (the wrong stuff).

Pure methanol is not really safe stuff to be around (fumes are bad) Which might explain why the fumes from the alky stove can be pretty noxious? I do try not to hang over that thing! (of course, it's not clear that it's a whole lot better to be breathing the fumes from a gas stove).

The combustion products from Methanol, when burned properly, are no worse than any other clean burning fuel. Methanol itself is toxic when ingested, inhaled or absorbed through the skin. A little exposure to it is not terribly harmful, but it's a good idea not to spill it on your skin. I prefer Denatured Alcohol, but Yellow HEET comes in a convenient size. I used it in alcohol lamps when I was a kid before the Methanol phobia took hold and it was still sold in drug stores.

It's worth keeping in mind that while their caps appear quite reliable, Heet bottles don't cope well with large changes in atmospheric pressure. One day I hiked up about 4,000 feet from the elevation I bought the Heet, and it sprayed the inside of my pack. It wasn't a big loss of fuel, but my clothes didn't really need to smell like Heet. Since then, I always transfer it to something like a Gatorade bottle. When sufficiently tightened, the surface area of the engaged threads provides more static friction than the pressure can overcome.

Everclear 190 has about 5% water content, the 151 version has around 25% water content.
