I've never seen one perched high in a tree like this. This one has been hanging around the shoreline near our house a lot this spring: I'm guessing it has a nest nearby.

That is an odd sight indeed. We have plenty of herons here and quite often they like to sit in the trees. Landing and take-off are not very graceful, as you probably can imagine! :D

They actually nest in trees. And if they were nesting near you, you'd likely know it. Then group nest in rookeries. It's actually an intimidating place. Walk along the forest floor with dozens of these things honking & squawking above you. Jurassic Park like.
