texasbb , it might be for volumetric measurement. I used to do that when I dug out or created a new bed; it helps in buying soil amendments if there's no compost available. In addition, if they're planning to put in a new pool, I'm assuming they need similar calculations. (When I cut down trees, can I tell you how many I cut down?)

texasbb we counted on the back of an envelope. It was more of a motivation and the second to last day was, indeed, the most wheelbarrows full. The last day was just three...tidying up before refilling the pond and moving on to our next project^^^^^^^ We hired a skylift and cut trees that were threatening our home. Clean up on that project continues.

You counted? Is that boredom or basic OCD? Bragging rights of needs-be must be accurate!

I was a bit out of it yesterday but my wife and I made arrangements to buy pizzas for the Dr's office we go to. We ordered extras so they'd have left overs. Folks, those guys, the medical staff in the thick of things, need help. Any help. Is there an online app of choice that would allow you to look up your local hospital/clinic and make a contribution to something like a general staff bonus fund? Right now I think it would be good for the medical workers and good for the people who donate. I like the social distancing aspect of plastic to bank account. After rereading my above I think more directly the question is "How can I throw a few dollars bonus to my local first responders?"

There are people who have parked their campers in the hospital parking lots to give the Dr.s a place to crash is what inspired. Somehow they found a way to open a closed down conference center (Doral Arrowood) so that medical personnel can stay there to reduce risk of infecting their families.

I bought a dozen ducklings. They are now 4 weeks old and living in our shop. Now I have 8 4 day old chicks in my bathtub.
If this doesn't end soon I will have 2 goats living in my living room and a couple piglets.

Actually, we plan to make some kind of succulent garden out of the front lawn, so I guess we'll have to do that. I suspect there might be objections to the tarp approach there.

Yeah, it isn't pretty, but it sure works. Darker the color, the faster it cooks it. We use sileage tarps on our fields (it kills thistles!), but any cheap tarp will work. Or do above ground beds and lay down a few thickness of cardboard before you build the bed to smother weeds. It biodegrades within a year or two under it all.

I'm guessing it may be reasonably doable to just remove the turf, and start from there. It'll all have to be a bit dug up in any case, because the change in use will require a change in the watering system, which probably is due for a major overhaul anyway after 20 years.

rebeccad, there are some good posts on tarping or using very large pieces of plastic, clear vs. solid, cardboard and more on the Organic Gardening forum (which Steve created). I'll see if I can find them for you. Some of the gardeners have done experiments on the issues of plastic covering to clear the soil for planting. Worms are another helpful tool. If you drink coffee, bury the grounds in the soil and the worms will help loosen it up. Daikon radishes are I'm told another way to break up the soil b/c their roots are so deep. When I first turned my (approximately 7000 sq. ft.) back yard into a garden, it had been in grass for decades. My father brought his big Mantis tiller over and helped me a lot; that tiller was too powerful for me to handle. Then I double dug each bed, gradually over a few years. Double digging worked amazingly well for me. I think you're right though; removal of the turf provides access to the soil, so you can tell what kind you have and decide what amendments to use. I've found that digging through grass is perhaps the hardest aspect of preparing a bed.

For smaller gardens where making a raised bed wouldn't be prohibitively expensive, my master gardener friend told me to just lay down some newsprint over the grass and fill with dirt. He recommended at least 6 inches.
