Had a few hours to kill this past weekend, so decided to load up the canoe and the boys to do a little exploring in Seminole State Forest. The forest is bisected by Blackwater Creek, which is one of the few major creeks in Florida which exists almost entirely within wilderness areas. Loaded up and ready for adventure... Starting our Journey... A typical view along the creek... I wasn't really looking to do any serious photography on this trip, but did manage to squeeze off a few wildlife shots while we cruised along. A limpkin feeding along the shoreline. A banded water snake doing it's best "I'm a scary water moccasin" impression. A majority of water moccasin stories in Florida are really just banded water snake encounters, but they are still fun to listen to. Blackwater Creek is fed by a number of small springs. We took a break from the canoe to "hike" to one of the nearby small springs that feed into the creek. By the looks of the boardwalk, it had been awhile since anyone else has visited this particular spring. Besides, I think the boys preferred going off trail a bit when the boardwalk wasn't passable. We spent a little bit of time learning about springs, where the water comes from, how to find a spring on a topo map, etc. It was a fun day in the woods. The Florida Trail also runs through this region, and my oldest son and I have plans to do an overnight backpacking trip as well some longer overnight canoe trips in the near future. Thanks for taking a look.
