A lot of folks would say a cevze is impractical, but I bring one with anyways. Just place the thing in the hot ash and coals... though I usually brew any coffee ahead of time.

I'm curious to know what you have for coffee when on the trail. I really enjoy my cup of coffee in the morning and would like to have a cup when I'm on the trail. What have you found to be the best option (good and convenient)? Of course, there's instant coffee, can't get much easier than that. Is there something better tasting and still easy enough to make on the trail? If instant is the way to go, what have you found to be the best? I have a gsi outdoors coffee boiler. A standard percolator works great. My method is to take out the basket, boil the water, dump in the coffee for 3 to 4 minutes (use more coffee or less water than you think you'll need) and when it's done cooking I add in cold water to sink the grinds. You still get the oil from the coffee beans without the grinds. Best cup of coffee and super simple to make. Besides, if you have a giant boiler like I do you can put in extra cooking equipment to save on negative space. Any boiler will do. My recommendation is the c&c cutlery boiler or a gsi percolator.

A more modern way of doing this is add the coffee and water in your titanium cup (I like the Toaks 550ml best) then bring it to a boil over a lightweight alcohol stove. Let steep a little then add the cold water. A pot for just coffee seems like unneeded weight. This is commonly known as cowboy coffee.

Every single one of us has tried that method. There's a good reason why none of us still do that. Much easier and lighter methods are available.

Best cup of coffee and super simple to make. I've never found cowboy coffee to be worth it, whether it's the grounds in the coffee I'm trying to drink or trying to clean out the pot (which I obviously use to cook other things on the trail) or carrying around wet, staining, accumulation of used grounds. Blech. I've given up the whole coffee thing altogether. I love coffee, but I can live without it for a few days as long as I have something hot to drink, preferably with a little caffeine. I just take tea bags now.

Generally, if you don't enjoy cowboy coffee, you're making cowboy coffee wrong. There is definitely an art to it. It needs a lot of baby-ing to do right. Very simple, but hard to master. That's not to say that everyone will enjoy it. Thats not even to say that you haven't made it right at some point. However, it's like stew. If you don't like stew, you probably haven't had good stew.

You can use it to heat up water for a shower on the trail or a bath. You can use it for a lot of cooking in general. Sure, you have to carry multiple things, but it really opens up your cooking options a lot. Besides, modernity is awful. If modernity was so great, I would like it wouldn't I? I am obviously the final authority on all things ever aren't I? (Dont answer that)

Had a pot, a lantern, a blanket, hatchet and a can opener. My buddy and I got so high the hatchet got multi-purposed as a pillow. Got to start somewhere. Got busted coming out of the woods, our faces were black from the kerosene lantern. Not implying a racial thing, just a ridiculous one. The cop let us go, he was laughing too hard to take anything seriously.

Melita paper cone filter and light plastic filter holder: the kettle I use to boil all my water anyway for the FD meals and morning oatmeal. Easy enough. Whichever pot or kettle I choose for the trip has the volume to cover the meal, coffee and a bit of cleanup.
Probably my only deviation from home then being I pregrind the entire trips beans instead of every day.

I haven't found any instant coffee that wasn't nasty, in my opinion. I drink it black, so no added stuff to make it better. If I do take coffee, it's just regular grind, and do it cowboy style. I do carry Bigelow brand, black tea bags for that much needed caffeine fix most of the time.

My solo coffee ritual is two tubes of Starbucks Via, though I found dollar stores or bodega Bustueo not bad. One cup with breakfast eats, another packing up and hanging the cup outside the pack on the trail.
Miss my daily fix and my nervous system does not like it. I do not in jest ascribe bad behavior to not getting coffee, but the headaches are real after 36-48 hours. As I have gotten older, it is worse. I can use other caffeine sources like black teas and good dark chocolate. I used coffee and chocolate to help me break my smoking addiction three decades ago.

+1 on the Waka. I like it much better than the Starbucks Via.
