Hey WWB-Sounds like a great expedition! Have you done it in Winter? Doable in 3 Days?

panatomicx - Yes I have. It's actually better because you can cross the lake on the ice. The Avalanche Lake - Indian Pass loop can be done as one long dayhike. HOWEVER, if you have the time, I would suggest camping at Lake Colden. From there, you have several dayhike options: 1) Short hike around Flowed Lands (out-and-back, or possible return over ice), with a possible short hike up the Opalescent River (very scenic) 2) Hike up Algonquin (STEEP trail). 3) Hike up Colden (STEEP trail). 4) Hike up the Opalescent to Mt. Marcy and/or Skylight Assuming you'll start at Heart Lake (Adirondak Loj)... from Lake Colden, you have a few hikes available to complete the loop, two of which can be combined with the dayhike options above: 1) Through Cold Brook Pass to Indian Pass Brook (note you'll have a short diversion to the west if you want to see Indian Pass itself - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED) 2) Up the Opalescent to Lake Arnold Trail and back to the Loj (Mt. Colden available). If you extend the loop to the Van Ho trail, you also have Tabletop (herdpath) and Phelps available to summit. 3) Up the Opalescent to Mt. Marcy, then back to the Loj on the Van Ho trail (Tabletop and Phelps also available). 4) Continue to Henderson Lake (near Upper Works trailhead), then loop back through Indian Pass on your way to the Loj. This option is "OK"... it's long... also pretty, but not as dramatic as the other options. Cold Brook Pass, Henderson Lake to Indian Pass, and Lake Colden trails might require breaking some trail. All depends on weather and recent hiker activity. You can obviously do all in reverse.
