To be fair, I get paid mostly to analyze data and write papers. 90% of my time is in front of a computer, not so glamorous. But a bit each year, yeah, we're up there drilling and setting instruments. The pay isn't terribly much. (I earned more as a summer intern in engineering before coming over to earth sciences). Yeah, I explained that to him, but that fact doesn't detract from the fact that you get to drill core samples on the ice sheet.

Tell him to brush up on his math and writing, especially the math. It's needed. Tell him not to annoy his teacher with "when are we ever gonna need this!??" Sine waves, imaginary numbers, matrix determinants, exponential functions, vectors, it's all in here. I use it all the time. He'll want calculus. That, and if he can figure out how to fix the lawn-mower starter at home by himself with a screwdriver and some wrenches, it won't hurt either. Ask Tigger. - Mike
