Hi all, I'll be staying in the Big Sky, Montana area with some friends in late February 2016. I'm interested in some first hand information on nordic skiing options in the West Yellowstone area. Preferably in the park itself. There appears to be some areas along Montana 191 and I am interested in those areas too. This would be for day skiing. No overnight trips....... Thanks in advance for your information and help. Sincerely, Randy

There are number of trails in the Madison River Area of the park just inside the park from West Yellowstone. One very nice ski just south of Big Sky is the Black Butte trail-Daly Creek Loop. But it's long and you'll be breaking trail as it's not a maintained ski trail as far as I know. But it is very nice. You could easily make it an and in and out trip. Local offices will have plenty of info. I'm sure you are aware that Big Sky itself has an extensive system of x-country ski trails as well. However, I feel the best x-country skiing in the park is along the northern road from Mammoth toward Cooke City. It's the only road open to automobile traffic in the winter and offers some great opportunities for skiing. Personally, I like the Blacktail Plateau Road area and especially Lost Lake over to the Tower Junction Road. But it is a bit of a drive from Big Sky to get there. Over the Bozeman Pass and down the Paradise Valleyand all that. It would be a long day.

Hi Jer, Thanks for the response and book information. One of the guys that I am skiing with has a keen interest in Yellowstone also and has done some research also. Looks like we're going to so a tour on a snowcat then get dropped off to do some skiing. The "inner and outer loop" trails also look interesting. I found this site had some good information and maps. Hope you find it useful too. www.freeheelandwheel.comSincerely, Randy

My dream list includes a multi-day ski tour from Old Faithful Village to the South Entrance Station via the Pitchstone Plateau.

My dream list includes a multi-day ski tour from Old Faithful Village to the South Entrance Station via the Pitchstone Plateau. I've hiked that in the summer. It would be quite a challenge over the plateau in winter. Very exposed and wind blown I would think Plus some pretty significant downhill switchbacks when coming off the plateau. Alway fun on cross country skis with a full pack Definitely be interesting though.

1981 I took a Winter vacation to the Snow Lodge in Yellowstone. Spent a week. Traveled by snow coach from moose junction to Old Faithful. Skied most of the basin and took a day trip over to Yellowstone Falls in the coach. Skied around there a bit. Most liked the trip into Angel Falls, with the blue ice forming wings around the falls. One of my best memories of my early relationship with April. Great Icy Hot story came from that trip.

Purchased a Wilderness Engineering Kinder Shuttle years ago to take a toddler ski touring. Have the BaseCamp duffle bag for conversion. Enjoy a crazy pipe dream of being the first to ski the High Uinta's Highline Trail end-to-end in winter. It may never happen, but definitely Trail Ready!
