I've got a brand new pack, an airline voucher and a long weekend in January. I'd like to find a place to explore, backpacking and winter camping my way. I prefer a loop for convenience, but am open to hiking in, setting up camp, and running a few out-and-backs from there. What are your favorite winter spots in January?

FYI... the non-mountainous areas of the northeast are snow-free right now, and not much is forecast in the next couple of weeks. So depressing. If you're looking for snow, head for the mountains. A great loop hike in the Adirondacks is Adirondak Loj (Heart Lake) - Indian Pass - Slight backtrack to Cold Brook Pass - Lake Colden / Flowed Lands - Avalanche Lake - Marcy Dam - Loj. Several day hikes/summits are available from Lake Colden / Flowed Lands. You could extend the mileage by travelling all the way to Henderson Lake. A more mountainous but short loop is St Huberts (Ausable Club) - Bear Den - Dial - Nippletop - Colvin (optional) - Indian Head / Fish Hawk Cliffs - St Huberts A longer mountainous loop can be made from a Great Range Traverse. There are bail-out points along the way to shorten the loop. www.summitpost.org/great-range/170965

I hope you weren't planning your backpack for this weekend... 2-3" of rain forecast for much of the northeast, along with the potential for significant ice.
