Between family and travel and weather, last week wasn't great. Oh, and my hip extensor (or something around there) was still inflamed, so running didn't work so well. Way too much good food, and too little exercise. Saturday I did pull off a 28-mile ride, but Xmas day saw me making do with a 2-mile social walk

My wife and I had hiked up to the Spike in the snow. I was delighted to had made it up to the Spike, mostly because I thought I was not going to make it. On the way back home, I was just walking to find that I was keeping up with my wife. When we got down to the flat part of the hike, my wife and I were chatting as we hiked on. After a bit, I was thinking of how my wife was walking quite fast and was pleased with myself I was keeping up with her. About a quarter of a mile from the house, I pulled ahead of my wife. As I got closer to the house, I was thrilled that I might even beat her home, for once, when she came running by. She was laughing and giggling that she was able to pass me. As we removed our snow encrusted clothing, outside, I mentioned how she was walking fast. She said n you were walking fast and I was trying to keep up with you.
The gist of this is that I reduced my running distance a few months ago. In a sort of starting over, I put my energies into running faster. In a way I get frustrated in knowing that I have ran further distance and I know I am holding myself back in how far I can run. The hike on the 25th has shown that my method to increase my speed is working and the success is encouraging. I hope to be ready for the spring to do the Table Rock run.

I think I started posting here yesterday but got distracted by w-o-r-k. *sighs*
Still plugging away at my 5k runner. Today I did my first 20 minute straight run. It's still REALLY slow, but I figure my breathing will continue to come easier and easier as I find a comfortable pace. Another 20 minute run when we get back from celebrating New Year's in KS this weekend.
I only have 5 days left of the program. If I haven't reached 5k for the time allotted, I'll start increasing my time or maybe trying to improve my pace. Not sure which route might be the best way to go. I ran 1.6 miles in 20 minutes today. Could be I will reach the 5k mark within the 35 minutes, but won't know until I get there....
FYI - I have never been able to run a mile in my life, so this is a huge thing to me. lol
I have also noticed a small twinge of pain in my right knee, usually during the cool down period. I'm going to start researching that, but I know I am in need of new shoes. Any other possible ideas of what might be causing that?

Mon: 5 mile run. Not feeling well (stomach), but I powered through. Tues: Fell asleep on couch at 7:00. Wed: 3.5-mile run w/ my daughter to see Xmas lights in the village. Thurs: Nasty snowstorm. Leave work late, home even later. Fri: Dinner w/ the wife, Xmas shopping, buy new XC ski pole (snapped my old pair). Sat: 5-mile XC ski Sun: 5-mile XC ski. Crashed several times. Smashed my knee so hard I nearly puked from the pain. I haven't been feeling 100% the past couple weeks (stomach). Not horrible, but not good either. Maybe a connection to grain, or maybe caffeine. Will pay more attention to diet and symptoms this week. How goes things? Are you usually grain free? If not, I've noticed there are huge benefits to cutting the grains. Just curious.... When is your adventure run? I have forgotten.

msdoolittle Socks. After much trial and error, means buying all kinds of new stuff, I found out I was wearing womens socks and they fit a bit short. I changed socks to the proper size for a great improvement.

Socks. After much trial and error, means buying all kinds of new stuff, I found out I was wearing womens socks and they fit a bit short. That's funny. Years ago I found that the socks labeled for my shoe size were too loose on me (due to my low-volume feet). I started wearing the next size smaller and pretty much ended all blisters. msdoolittle worn-down shoes can hurt the knees, especially if you have a tendency to roll out at the heel (the wear will be greater there, which will increase the roll...). Your Running program seems to me to be wisely ramping you up very cautiously, so fix the shoes and see what develops. (And take advice from me with a grain of salt...my approach to pain while working out is to continue until it is obviously an injury and I have to see the MD...got one of those in my near future...).

As usual on a weekend, I got in what I call a "Mental Health Walk" or "Sanity Hike". A short 2-3 hours in the woods is better than nothing. Saw a bald eagle, a white egret, and squirrels galore. No ospreys or herons today. And no humans, either.
