So I am reading a book called Eating Stone and the chapter I'm on takes place in the Baja, Mexico backcountry.
Is there good backpacking in Baja? I'm not sure if there are trails and campsites or even water up in the mountains. But this is just exploratory, so any help appreciated.

How about the experiences from someone from college more than 40 years ago? I spent my orientation in Sierra San Pedro Martir National Park on a two week climbing and backpacking trek through the range. No trails, just route finding and canyon tracking. There were roads into the Park from the west slope. Water was sparse but doable. Wiki

Sierra San Pedro Martir National Park Thanks! This looks like one of the only protected places in Baja. I didn't realize elevations were over 9000'. So this is a good start, thanks.

Good subject. From what I gather on climbing forums, Baja is still relatively safe. But you better know what you are doing or it could be mega no bueno.
Personally, given what we have in the US, a trip to Mexico back country is a low reward/high risk idea if you don't know EXACTLY what you are getting into and have someone along that knows the local ropes.

Baja is still relatively safe. But you better know what you are doing or it could be mega no bueno. Safe how? Terrain? Water? Or people? If people, is the problem theft? Bodily injury? Or something else like kidnapping? I never know how to evaluate nebulous "it's not safe" warnings.

I never know how to evaluate nebulous "it's not safe" warnings. Cartel warfare, kidnapping, extortion, robbery, corrupt police, etc. Yes, the people.
