This may not quite be on-topic for this forum, but I think it's the closest fit for it. I've recently made a small map of a nearby area where I've done some hikes. I realize that this is not a local forum, and so most of you have not been there (but some have likely been very close). I'm looking for suggests/critiques to make my map better. I produced it to look rather similar to a 7.5 minute quad, though of course a different size to fit on an 8.5x11" sheet. QGIS was used, thru many fits of frustrations, and at least one entire start-over. I've already made a couple of changes which I've not yet transferred to the pdf map: the trailhead icons, in red on the pdf, are now dark blue. The trail distances, to the nearest 0.01 mi on the pdf, have been re-rounded to the nearest 0.05 mi. Some questions: I have no grid on the map, either lat/long or UTM. Should I? The map is at 1:20k scale. Even at this scale, the trails appear close together. Should I make an expansion, probably 1:10k or thereabouts, to show the trails better? If so, I'd drop the distances from the 20k map. Sideling Hill PDF map

That looks like an awesome view from the bluff on the north end.

AegisIII, Nice map! I just started poking around in QGIS myself. What did you use for the Topo base map for this?

In a sense there was no base map; I had to find or make the data for each layer. For the topography I used Maryland's statewide LiDAR service. Except for those I had to create myself, other layers were based on Maryland state data and The National Map.

Ahh, that is great info. Thanks!
So far QGIS seems pretty nice, although slightly crashy on my mac. I'm looking forward to making some maps of the areas I hike. I assume I'll be able to find a similar LIDAR source for NC.
