but all the snow on the lower peaks has melted. There could still be snow and ice on the northern slopes. And also in the canyons. Yes, of course. 30” of snow will insulate itself and could last a good while, especially on northern slopes or shaded areas. Are you aware of the mountain lion incident in Pima canyon in the Catalinas?

Y'all are awesome, thanks for the updates. That is crazy about the lions, I've never heard of such a thing. I didn't think lions were social enough to share a kill, and didn't know they ever ate carrion. Weird. I hate it that they put the animals down, even though they had little choice.

I hate it that they put the animals down, even though they had little choice. Actually, it wasn't a kill by the lions. It appears that the lions came upon the corpse and fed off of it. The issue is that mountain lions aren't scavengers and don't normally eat human flesh. It's been shown that once a lion does taste humans, they will be more likely to pursue people. The three were killed to prevent them from doing just that. In this morning's news it was revealed that a person was arrested who was related to the killed person. It appears the dead guy was a victim of a car jacking. A sad story, all around.

Everybody from all over the country and other countries are here recreating right now. We have some back ways into the canyons but we did cross paths briefly today and some out-of-towners asked if we had seen any wild animals out there. We told them only roadrunners and rabbits but after the news story they were more concerned with lions than car jackers. Too bad about the victim and the three lions.
Don’t worry about the crowds if you end out here. Shank’s Pony will take you away in short order. A couple miles in or just about any rough steep trail will leave 95% of them behind. We do have a lot of regular back country hikers though but they are mostly cool cats. Tomorrow will be in the 70s and it has been mostly sunny lately with some excellent hiking temps. I’m hoping for some more Indian Summer soon. Supposed to go down a few degrees after Monday.

Of all the things I am concerned about, Mountain Lions are near the very bottom of the list!
BTW, got a reply from SNP today, saying that the high country and Manning are under several feet of snow, with some icy areas. So, might be beyond my capabilities. On the other hand, he said that there is water at all the campsites other than Happy Valley. So, I might still head to Saguaro, and just stay down low if the high country is inaccessible. It'll be a last minute call.

We climbed to a great vantage point on our 10k today and there are definitely large visible snow patches near the rounded top of the Rincons. Another storm is on the way for tonight. Between the storms the hiking has been glorious in southern Arizona but we are getting some needed precipitation when they do hit.

we are getting some needed precipitation when they do hit. That's always a good thing. Wish we'd get some precip here in central Texas, we're getting back into pretty serious drought status.

I thought central Texas would be getting all these storms. Is it passing over and hitting eastern Texas? Seems like most states are seeing these storms sweeping through.

Just returned from a fabulous trip to Saguaro. Totally lucked out on the weather, and was able to spend a night at Juniper Basin, 2 at Manning, then Juniper on the way out. Trail to Manning was clear other than a few snow patches, and there was water everywhere. What a spectacular area. I'll try to get a TR up soon. Thanks so much to everyone who provided valuable info to me.

Wow you did hit it perfectly. Five days ago it was raining n the desert in the night and all day long. Then everything became unbelievably sublime.
