Just got a call on my iPhone. The contact showed on the phone display and voice recognition indicated the call was from "John Penca". I thought is was my dad (same name), so I answered it. Got a recording saying it was Microsoft and my IP address had been compromised by foreign phones and my IP addy would be canceled within 24 hours. Gave me a prompt to talk to a technician; I hung up.
I checked my "recents" and it showed the call came from my phone number.
WTF? Did someone break my iPhone code/addy? Would Microsoft take over my phone to call me? It seems like a bogus call, but I can't figure out why it came from my phone.

Happens all the time (Spoofing). They are looking at trying to stamp it out and the FCC just put in new requirements that will force Verizons and the like to nip this in the bud and/or free filtering/blocking for all U.S. users.

Thanks tigger . Never happened to me before. How the hell would someone get to use my number to call me? Seems if they can call me from my phone, they could call anybody under my name (can they?). If it's a software glitch, it is very concerning. ETA: and what about data stored on my phone? Can they access it?

They can use a script to make it look like it's coming from someone in your contacts but they can't actually see what they're pulling from.

johntpenca , I've had that same experience - multiple calls allegedly from me, with my phone number. I think one day I got 10 - something like that. That might have been the time I answered and told off someone in such a manner that it prompted what I'm sure were vulgar comments. Now if I'm in the mood I play games with them, then hang up before they swear at me in some foreign language (that's happened too). More and more they're using computerized calls; the voices are so monotone and speak w/o any breaths in-between that they can't be human. And the grammar is obviously not that of an English speaking person.

Yeah, these two were a recording, not a real person. Same thing though. It's just that they can call me from "my phone" that is disconcerting.

The spoofed calls that piss me off come from another number in the same area code. I know enough not to bother answering calls that come from my own phone (on my own phone).

Don't what to distress you, but our IT guys said it is possible that once you answer, your phone number is indicated as a real one and you might expect more fake calls in the coming weeks. This sorts of scams are really on the rise.

The thing is my dad's name is the same as mine. So when the phone audio announced "John Penca" and the screen display said the same, I assumed it was my father. There is no way to tell if it is not him without picking up. I'm well versed in scam calls and never answer calls from unknown numbers and block them immediately. Also, my phone is area code 310; I get several calls a day from the 310 area code and other SoCal area codes.

I get spoofed calls from what look like my children's school or from coworkers.
I got an 800 call the other day saying they were from support and they were basically trying to get me to help them remote into my computer.
I didn't actually do it but I know this stuff off the top of my head so I led her on. At one point she was threatening me with escalating to her manager because of my slightly off answers. When I told her that I was just playing with them because I am an IT security expert ... CLICK.
I have also gotten calls from "Apple support" basically trying to do the same thing.

I did finally address the SS# scammers who were calling literally 10 or 20 times a day and leaving the same grammatically incorrect message. I answered, and it seemed to give me a real person, whom I told I knew they were (expletive deleted) scammers, and not to call me again. To my amazement, that seems to have worked. I figured me picking up wasn’t any different than them getting my voice mail, so it wouldn’t do any harm.
